I did something really stupid, I lit a firecracker and it exploded on me before I had a chance to move. My ear has been ringing for 3 days.

Do you think it will go away? Or is the ringing permanent?

go to the doctor. that's not good.

Damn I really don't want to do that

It's ringing 3 days later, and you don't want you go to the doctor to see if you damaged your ear? That's about all you'll get on here I think. You should have expect that answer from us. Go to the doctor or don't complain.
I had a blog. It sucked.

Bah, I went to a concert once where the speakers pummeled you for 5 hours straight, and my ears rang for about a week. It was kinda a dull ring, but it lasted a while. I guess it depends on how bad the ringing is.

I was just wondering if this had happened to anyone else and how long it took to go away.

By the way kids, being the resident disease bearer, I'd like to inform you; that once you experience hearing loss it doesn't come back.

Same thing happened to me with a firecracker, except it was thrown and landed right next to me. Right ear had a ring for a few days, then it went away. Now my hearing's fine. I presume.

Is it so impossible for sex to not be one of a persons priorities?

Trust me, it's available for when I need it.. but other than that, you can only have so much sex, before it becomes an absolute bore, like anything else on the planet.

My ear rang for about a day and a half when my vacuum cleaner broke and started shrieking. But go to the doctor.

I've shot an AK-47 without ear protection for about an hour (forgot to bring it...oops) ears rang for about 2 and a half weeks after, I'm perfectly fine now, so I cant find any reason why you shouldnt be alright. I'm also a drummer and rarely use anything over my ears...I plan on going deaf before I get married, life seems like it would be happier that way anyway (joke).

If the doc is free....go....if not, don't bother unless it's still ringing after a 3 or 4 weeks. Believe me when I say a firecracker has nothing on 7.62x39mm rounds constantly firing at your ears.

Hey, it's like on that game Soldat when a grenade blasts right beside you and your ears ring for about 5 seconds!

But honestly, I wouldn't think that the ringing is a problem. I think that it will go away after a while.
Very funny Scotty. Now beam down my clothes.

I had a dull pain in my ear the day after a really loud gig, and I was right next to the drumkit for most of it. I went to the doctor and told him exactly what had happened over the last week* and he had a look down my ear, saw no wax or anything, and from what I had told him he diagnosed me with a bruised eardrum. He said it would heal in about 2 weeks, in the meantime, try not to get water in the ear, wear earplugs around any loud noise, and avoind using those earbud headphones (ie like those ipod ones).
That's what happened to me. Take from it what you like.

*Chuckles' advice - always tell your doctor EVERYTHING that might help him make an accurate diagnosis, even if it's really embarrassing and makes you feel like a fool.

"Exposure to very loud noise (90 dB or more, such as jet engines at close range) can cause progressive hearing loss. Exposure to a single event of extremely loud noise (such as explosions) can also cause temporary or permanent hearing loss."

And where did you get that, Mr. I-know-everything?

It will probably go away, but if it doesn't, it probably means you have tinnitus in that one ear. Tinnitus is a chronic ringing in your ears that never goes away, your entire life. Can be a straight ring, clicking, sine wave, a variety of things. Yeah, have fun when you're crazy and start shoving pencils into your ear canal to try to make it stop.

Almost as stupid as people with their iPods and unlocked volume control, listening to music at well over 100 dBA. Damn kids and their music. At least this way, they'll go deaf, get hit bar a car, and the world will be down a few idiots.

Being partly deaf in one ear isn't all that bad ;) I am about 25% deaf in my left ear, got damaged in a terrible ear infection I had growing up, and my ear drum ruptured, most horible pain I have ever had to deal with. I only really notice the deafness when I use my headphones, so it isn't too bad.

Always when I come back from drumming, I hear a buzzing sound, but for a few hours.

Once I got an infection, and it rang for like 2 days, it was horrible, I couldn't sleep. But I recovered.

Hope you recover, Heretik. :)

I have constant ringing in my left ear. :( No clue where it's from. I only really notice it when it's otherwise quiet tho.

And I have a horrible ear wax problem. My ear canals are smaller than most so ear wax can easily block them off. :(

MZZT, drug stores sell ear wax removal kits. They're usually just drops of a certain solvent that you drop in your ear once or twice a day, and it...well dissolves the earwax. I imagine they give you some kind of swab to remove it, but you can just use q-tips.

don't use q-tips!

q-tips are the single easiest way to getting extremely painful ear infections. let the wax fall out naturally after using eardrops.

Your going to be deaf before you know it, you are slowly losing your hearing each and everytime you play drums.

I am trying those things. I have a sneaking suspicion they only add to the buildup. But whatever... hopefully they're actually working.

Interesting... I never knew about that.

Eh, I've been using q-tips for years...you're right that it is better for it to fall out naturally with the drops though. I'm familiar with my ear canal geometry and I've never stuck a q-tip too far into my ear.

This, my friends, is so very true.

I was on my knees crying for about 10 minutes one time, trying to get wax out of my ears. Never again.

Sometimes I'll be sitting down on the computer or whatever, and literally a small ball (perfectly round) of wax will roll out of my ear. :o Feels very strange. ;)

I just put my finger in my ear as far as I can and yank it out really fast. The change in air pressure helps pull the wax out and break it loose. Also, have a tissure handy.

And you'll be fine.

heheheheheh, this reminds me of the time I was paintballing and borrowed money to buy a smoke grenade. I was all excited, and had saved the smoke for the perfect moment. My teammate and I were pinned down behind a rock debating whether or not to use the smoke, and I said screw it, took it out, pulled the pin, aaaaand... it blew up in my hand, so I dropped it like a hot potato, and we were covered in smoke, couldn't see, couldn't breathe, and still couldn't move because we'd get sprayed. :D

I say see a doctor. I mean, I think it'll probably go away, but yo ucan't really be too safe. Plus, they'll probably tell you it'll be fine, and then you can stop worrying.
