Do crickets "cricket" or "chirp"?
2005-05-30, 9:12 AM #1
Now here is a rather bizzare argument my parents go into last night. My father said that the crickets were "cricketing" but my mother said they were "chirping". Personally, I'm not even sure "cricketing" is even a verb so the whole argument to me sounded stupid. Voice your opinion by voting in the poll!

(BTW, try not to vote for "I refuse to vote in this poll!" for accurate results. I only add that option because its a running gag in all my polls :p)

Cricketing sounds like something I'd made up, so, yes, they're cricketing.

Funny; the score is 8-0 for chirping, but the first two replies both say cricketing.

A chirp, to me, makes me think the sound comes from the mouth, like a bird. Crickets make their noise by rubbing their hind legs together (or something along those lines). I don't really know how that affects this thread.

Maybe it doesn't sound like "chirp", but the commonly accepted word for what they do is "chirp".

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Well when a room goes quiet, I don't go *chirp chirp* to indicate the noises of crickets, as that's the noise small birds make. So I go *cricket cricket*.

The word describing the sound is "chirp". The onomatopoeia for the sound is "cricket", from whence is derived the name of the bug.

So you would say: "The cricket chirped," and "The cricket went 'cricket'."
