Does anybody sit here late at night, refreshing the forums, hoping for a new post? I do. :(

Well I'm not refreshing them, but I check back time to time...

The first couple of months at College, and a few weekends during the year, I found myself posting at 3 and 4 am.

Yes Vin. I certainly do. Not always but often enough.

And actually, I'm on Pacific time, so even at 10 or 11, the forums can be pretty slow...

I log in to the administrator section and refresh the "new user" page. Nothing excites me more than a new soul to munch on.

I rarely ever post here because I am not fond of censorship (come on, an emoticon that says "banned" is a bit to far... though somewhat amusing), but I found myself so bored last night that even I was pressing F5.

Seriously, Brian, there is no "new user" here, it's probably just an old user that forgot his password. It's not like there are any JK communities left that have a central lobby where users can be referred here every time they ask "wut iz sbx?!?!1". All that's left of our kind are forums and IRC chat rooms.

Wow, I never thought I could be so pessimistic! I think I'm gonna go bake some cookies.

I always have the forums up when I'm sitting at the computer, and that includes late at night. It's a lot worse for people on the West Coast. This place is like a ghost town after 12:00 am Pacific Time.

Actually, this forum isn't too dead, you can post a message, read another one, go back to the forum's index, and see several new posts.

That cracks me up and I'm not entirely sure why...

Aside from that, there have been times this year, particularly when I was writing my code/project and was at my laptop 18 hours a day, when I have been guilty of refreshing many many a time.

It makes me want to use Opera and its delightful 'refresh every' feature when it's dead here...

I'm so sad. :(

Actually we have a constant stream of new users both here and on the level commenting system. Just because there's no central place to play JK (as if the zone was good in the first place) doesn't mean Massassi doesn't have a growing community. Or at least staying the same size with people leaving and others coming in. Massassi isn't dependent on the interest level in Jedi Knight to maintain itself anymore.

Maybe massasi should be a place where people can play/host games? That's the one thing massassi is really missing, imo.

We actually had that at one point, it was called the MPG: Massassi Players Group - but it wasn't very popular so we took it down. Maybe if it was a forum applet or something, I don't know.
2005-05-31, 2:01 PM #25
We should have that again, it would be popular now, more now than it was before.
Nothing to see here, move along.

True, with so many powerful search engines and people referring people I guess how active the games are is of little relevance, though I don't believe any game in the JK series is even produced anymore so those numbers might go down gradually (especially if you keep munching on poor souls :( ). Massassi will still be the first place I check and refer people to when the situation calls for it.

My clan also once had a web program called "JK War Zone" where a user could register and put up the IP and type of game, but like the MPG, it caught on fire and burned to a crisp as nobody wanted to use something so web based...

However, the JK community did beg the developers of XFire (http://www.xfire.com) messenger for several months to get support for JK1 and we finally got it. (It was already supported JO/JA). Assuming that they don't get wiped out by Yahoo's frivolous lawsuit, the contact lists are ring based, meaning that you can see your friend's friends when they are playing. I've had a few people add me through XFire who were friends of my friends when they noticed that I was playing JK, so it does work. The down sides are not everyone's willing to use the "new" program so people are playing JK and nobody even knows, XFire is listing everyones IP, not just the hosts, one per every several seconds, making it very difficult to join. One click joining isn't supported (It seems only LucasArts and Microsoft know how to do this with JK), and XFire in-game (in-game instant messaging) isn't supported either, making it hard to get a player's attention to get the IP of a game (Bazman (xfire staff) said that they would work on this, but I don't know what the 8-bit palleted graphics/16-bit accelerated graphics would limit them to).

Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, the only JK players left limit themselves to #nar and #jk (and probably #massassi too if you're Brittish) on holonet.org.

Needless to say, XFire and IRC are still better than what remains of Zone and GameSpy as far as finding "decent" games. I believe Severen made a script that broadcasts your IP and gametype to the chat, the only downside with this idea is it seems that people #massassi don't get along well with people from #nar/#jk and vice versa. (something to do with a conflict of map developers).

I refresh waiting for a new post all the time. But I don't stay up at night. I sleep. You know, its what happens when you close your eyes and let your brain shut down.

If I'm up really late for schoolwork I check the discussion forum once before I go to bed. Habit of procrastination, even though I'm already done with my work.
