A grandiose film to say the least. Han Zimmer did a great job with the music. Great acting by Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe too. I definitely should had bought this instead of Kill Bill. Kill Bill simply can't compare to this film in terms of story, dialoge, and sword fights.

Indubitably.

I agree.

Ken Watanabe deserved the Oscar for his performance. While a great film, I still enjoy Kill Bill more.

Kill Bill and The Last Samurai are two totally different films. One is a cheesey revenge funny overly violent flick thing, the other a serious fighting drama film thing.

Both great films, but I can't really compare them. One is meant to be Oscar calibur, the other is just meant to be a fun time.

I think Kill Bill was Oscar caliber in terms of direction and cinematography.

Quentin Tarantino has more writing talent than all of Tom Cruise's script writers put together. He's prodigious.

The Last Samurai was a great movie with a decent script, dont get me wrong, but Tarantino's writing is a cut above the rest.

And yeah you shouldnt have bought Kill Bill, they're releasing no less than six different DVD versions of it including special editions, boxed sets, and one version with the two Volumes re-cut into one long movie. So yeah, should've waited [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I can't wait for that cut, can't wait to see the House of Blue Leaves in color and Sophie's other arm being chopped off (Both of which were featured in the Japanese cut).

Personally, I thought the Last Samurai wasn't that good. Essentially it was just Dances with Wolves in Japan. The story was predictable, the score was more or less recycled from Zimmer's score for The Thin Red Line (Three-chord variations), and there were some things that just didn't make sense (oh, alright. I see. They've both been shot and stabbed multiple times yet they are still able to mount up and ride out once more).

That said, there were good moments like the Ninja attack and the foggy battle.

Personally, I thought 'Kill Bill' was a piece of crap.

But I do fully intend to see 'The Last Samurai'.

Edit - Left out the relevant 'The Last Samurai' comment...

By the way, how tall is Tom Cruise? He seems shorter than Ken Watanabe and also Nicole Kidman.

I enjoyed The Last Samurai more than Kill Bill. Kill Bill was just too over the top with cheesiness for me.

Tom Cruise is one of the shortest men in Hollywood coming in at just 5'7. But can get almost any girl in the world as well.

The movie was great I thought, but I found it incredibly cheesy that people kept getting shot and just would not die. But the moment a Samurai slashed, the enemy screams and dies.

I remember the part though at the beginning when the General was about to kill himself. I leaned over to my girlfriend and said "You might want to close your eyes" as soon as I saw the knife cause I knew what was coming. She asked why, and I said "Seppuku" and she went "Eww no" and turned away. I had warned her before the movie that we would most likely see at least one case of it, and told her that I'd warn her if I saw it coming. I rule.

I have yet to see Kill Bill, but I loved The Last Samurai. I was a big Tarantino fan when I was younger, but I feel that I've grown away from those types of films. I think they're just plain tacky. The Last Samurai, Master and Commander, and Return of the King were my favorite films of the year.

Thrawn, are you talking about the scene where the general of the modern japanese army and ex-samurai gets his head chopped off by Katsumoto? Isn't that bushido?

Uh, bushido is the Samuri code ("Way of the Warrior), so i have a feeling that's not what you're thinking of, Kieran.

A really interesting post-911 storyline..

American 'good guy' soldier is sent to fight rebels, rebels turn out to be 'good guys' and American fights alongside rebels..

Certainly not what I expected the hollywood machine to be churning out after the whole 'war on terror' thing.

More a comment on girls than anything else.

I bought the movie the other day but haven't watched it yet. Maybe later today.

Bushido is the code that governs the Samurai, Seppuku is the formal language form of the word Harakiri, meaning ritual suicide (either by self-disembowlement, or sword up through the mouth and through the brain, I don't know. I imagine someone here knows more and can elaborate?)

*smacks him on the back of the head* Don't try to politicize something that is strictly entertainment. Besides, the American soldier was a depressed and raging drunk until he got captured by the Samurais. And there was no good guys vs bad guys theme going on. Both sides were right and wrong in their own way.

Hmm so Kidman is taller than him (5'10''), I always thought it was the high heels or something. What exactly is Dances with Wolves about?

An American Civil War soldier is about to have his leg amputated, but he would rather die. He sneaks away to the frontlines and in his suicidal charge becomes a hero. He gets to request a new posting, he wants to see the frontier while it still exists.

When he arrives at his posting, no one is there, and by another set of strange twists of fate, no one will ever know that he went to his post. He decides to stick around and wait if anyone is going to arrive. He sees a wolf that he gradually befriends. Some Sioux indians also eventually show up to investigate, and after some initial setbacks he learns about them and understands them.

That's a summary of the first half. From then on it has definite parallells with the Last Samurai. It's a good movie, if a bit sentimentally manipulative (*booo, hiss* at unstoppable western civilisation) and a bit slow at times. It won a whole set of Oscars though, including Best Picture. Go out and rent it if you've got three spare hours. If nothing else, it's a good depiction of a lost era and a lost culture with a classic John Barry soundtrack to boot.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

liked samurai more than kill bill vol.1, although vol.2 was much better than vol.1, but you can't compare kill bill with the Last Samurai...so lets just say i liked them both.

on the bullet front which a load of people keep talking about, here and with my friends. gotta remember the type of bullet, or pellet more like that they were using back then. I don't know callibers (sp?) but i do know that it was well known, even into world war 1 for people to be shot several times and still servive. Bullets we have today are designed to be much more lethal, are bigger, travel faster and are more likely to past straight through the target causing real damage on exit. It was very unlikely that a bullet back then would pass through the target and could even be stopped by several layers of HARD clothing and even if it did get through it wouldn't cause serious damage.

anyways thats all, both great movies.
