Half Life and CD keys
2005-06-05, 12:00 PM #1
OK so today i decided to reinstall Half Life to join my friends in a game of DoD. When i went to register the CD key, Steam told me that my CD was duplicate and that someone else i using my CD Key. ****! Does anyone know if there is a way to get Half Life to appear under the 'my games' list??

Yeah.

You either have to buy an actual copy of the game BUM BUM BUMMMMMMM!

Or someone used a key gen and generated your key and used it.

Theres a thing on steampowered.com somewhere that tells you what to do..

BTW, it costs $10, and takes FOREVER. And you have to mail them a picture of your CDkey, and I think the actual instert.

SO... theres no way to warez monkey around it, if thats what you're doing. And I'm not accusing you of doing so.

Blue Shift keys are also valid Steam Keys, if you have a copy lying around.

That happens a lot. You see plenty of opend games at EB Games, kids come in open it copy the code and run out, plus the code generators. (I also wonder how much of the piracy is perpetrated by employees)

You could contact steam and ask what you should do about it, since you have both the cd and the code.

Yeah, and it works to get you Half-Life.

IE, without even OWNING half-life you can stick the Blue Shift CDkey in, and download Half-Life from Steam FOR FREE.

nope, the blue shift key doesn't work. Will the Opposing force key work then?

Reminds me of what happened to me.

Got a used copy of Far Cry, opened the box. Lo and behold, the back cover for the CD case was gone. This had the CD Key on it.

No multiplayer for me.

I would return the game, I think.

Just a note, Valve has publicly stated that they actually SHIPPED duplicate CD keys, so it may have nothing to do with warez whatsoever. In this case, they are just robbing you.

This would be a point I agree with with Brian on. When it comes to any form of customer support, Valve is a steaming pile of crap.

Wasn't it Sierra who caused the cockup with duplicate CD keys?

Your best bet would probably to grab another copy of HL out of the bargain bin. Costs a lot less than getting your current key validated by Valve, I expect.

Q. How many testers does it take to change a light bulb?
A. We just noticed the room was dark; we don't actually fix the problems.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Sierra shipped duplicate CD keys, not Valve.
That painting was a gift, Todd. I'm taking it with me.

Just take a picture of your case with the key on it and email valve. They'll give you another key.

i'll probably just buy a bargin bin copy since i don't think half life even costs 10 bucks these days its worthless to send it and wait forever to get a new key

thanks for the help all

Actually my friend did that and it took like no time to get his key working.

If you get the plantium pak, you'll get 3 valid CD keys with it (Half-Life, Counter-Strike, and Blue Shift are all valid) so you'll have two keys as nice backups in case you lose your account. The opposing force cd-key does NOT work because its in a different format than the others.
The cake is a lie... THE CAKE IS A LIE!!!!!

Yep, just another case of people wanting to jump the gun and blame Valve, when it was Sierra's responsibility.

They're just anti-Valve. The majority of their claims are either baseless or completely wrong.

Only if you pay them $10. Really. Go check their support section on steampowered.com. Spelled out right there. It's supposed to keep people from resetting others' keys.

BTW if you don't have HL2 yet, just buy the HL2 Silver pack on Steam. $60 for like 11 games (every game available on Steam). So you'd also get any old HL games you didn't have anyways.

That's interesting. I PMed that Sherman (I think that's what his name was) fellow on the forums and discussed it with him. He said to email him some evidence of ownership. I took a picture of my case with the key on it, sent it to him, and he sent me a new key. I paid nothing.
