Made any interesting purchases recently? I bought Coldplay's new album today.
Yes, this is a blatent attempt to get a thread about my favourite band's new album on the discussion forum - sue me :p
First imressions. X&Y is very aurally full-on. Coldplay have taken the idea from A Rush of Blood to the Head of a lot of things making music at once, then making them all come together and sound nice. Personally, I love it. The music is multi-layered and you notice something new about each song every time you listen to it. Lead singer Chris Martin said 'Parachutes was like a gentle hand on the knee. X&Y is a good rogering'. Very true. Every song is complex with Martin often exploring his full vocal range. The album is also rather long (again in stark comparison to Parachutes) with no song under 4 minutes and quite a few over 5.
U2 guitar moments abound. If you like the way The Edge plays, buy this album. It's a little dissapointing to not have as many piano-driven tracks as ARoBttH with John Buckland's guitar coming back to the forefront, but the addition of an organ on a few tracks is interesting and welcome.
Having only listened to this album one and a half times so far it's hard to form any true opinions, but so far White Shadows and the beautiful Fix You (gave me goosebumps the first time - destined to be a hit single and would be absolutely magical live) have made the biggest impression.
So thoughts on the album? Or Coldplay?
Or anything else you've bought recently...
