Invention Allows Humans to Breathe Like Fish

This is amazing

It was posted on Fark with the tag 'cool', which frankly just doesn't cover it, IMO. This is just incredible. But it's one of those inventions that as soon as I heard about it, made me think "why didn't I think of that?!". It's such a simple, obvious idea, I can't believe nobody has come up with it til now. But think what this could mean once the technology has been improved - I would assume that diving times are severely limited by how much oxygen you can carry in a tank, with this, all you need is a powerful enough battery. The one in the prototype allows for an hour of diving, this could end up letting people dive for days!!

Cool, so now we won't have to genetically engineer ourselves to have gills, once the polar cap melts and everything is flooded.

I have read about such an inventions a loooong time ago. And in the (old) book it sounded as if this was already old, when the book came out.

But it's still cool.
Sorry for the lousy German

Humans take in a lot more oxygen than fish do, and water simply isn't oxygen-rich enough to provide humans with enough to survive underwater, so this invention won't work for any length of time.

It still seems less cumbersome than SCUBA. And it can only get better.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Reminds me of fluid-breathing from The Abyss.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

Even if it worked, I doubt I could ever even attempt to breathe a liquid. (About the Abyss)

True. It only works for a few hours.

That's not so much of a catch as something I'd normally do.

Do you think it could be combined with a small Hoffman apparatus to separate the hydrogen and oxygen in the water, to supplement the oxygen under pressure, or would that take too much energy?

You do realize that was almost all real, right [or at least possible with currently used technology]? Particularly the rat sequence..

As to this thread.. glee.

I am not sure which is more exciting, this invention, or maevie starting a thread! Kevin Costner, here i come!!
Also, I can kill you with my brain.
