So I was sitting in physics class, and after my teacher blew up various things, he got into a discussion with some pupils who were sitting close to his desk. I didn't hear much of the discussion, but at one point, my teacher actually stood up and said "What makes you think that? I'm not a n00b!"

Yeah. I'm shocked.

When was taking CS 1, in the first week of class, a kid asked a question that started out with "I'm just a noob at this but..."

Everyone started laughing at him. :)

It is a word people have used before. I've heard it used in one or 2 movies made about 10 years ago.
nope.

I called someone a n00b at work once. She knew what I meant, but no one else did.

You all have to realize, there is a big phonetical difference between the old word noob or newb and n00b.

Let me demonstrate:
/me says noob
/me says n00b

Did you hear it?

Thought so...

I use the word n00b regularly in day to day conversations.

I have a friend named Brandon Newbie. That's literally his last name. Hate to be that guy...

newbie/noob is not a 'leet' word... yeah people have used it for a while. sorry to burst the internet's bubble.
2005-06-07, 12:18 PM #16
Yea, people use 'newb'/'n00b' commonplace in conversation around here .. n they're quite detached from the internet/gaming

It's used in just about anything, n it doesn't even mean what the internet "n00b" means anymore. IE last saturday at a birthday party: my friend dropped his slice of cake. Other friend said "you noob" meaning he's clumsy, ahaha let's all laugh. noob at life, etc.

"Noob Saibot" is actually the name of the creators of Mortal Kombat spelled backwards - "Tobias" and "Boon".

You must realise that he's a native Dutch, so even "newbie" would be an odd word.

And today, it got worse. He actually had a conversation about how the laws of gravity could "own" stuff. The English word, yes.
2005-06-07, 3:03 PM #21
By saying the word owned everytime someone does something stupid and gets corrected, I've managed to get mostly everyone around me to say "owned!"

I've been tempted to say "owned" sometimes when people muck up badly... It's just... so.. fitting.

When someone gets witfully stupified in our group, which happens often, we all moan out "OWNED!" and if it's stupid, we say "*****" (Po nd)

I know a kid that says "Nub" meaning "newb". But we both say stuff got owned.

It's very close to being in the dictionary, because a lot of people say it now a days. Girls are even saying "L. O. L." in their conversations, instead of just laughing.

We must learn how to control our usage of these words, or we will end up like these two:

People in my school have started to say "pwn". Often in quite inappropriate contexts. It makes me cry. (Not that I think there's anything wrong with the word, but there's something about having your own idiolect turned against you by preppy girls... it feels like having your first-born child eaten alive before your eyes.)
2005-06-07, 4:47 PM #27
My parents have picked up the term "pwn3d" from my brother and me. It's quite amusing.

My mom said 'jk' today, but only to mock my little bro. Guess that's okay. Sometime my brother and I say 'lol' (like 'lawl') around my dad because it bothers him :)

I still don't get all of these. How do you pronounce "pwn3d"? It sounds like a droid from star wars. If the word is supposed to be "pawned", why not just typed that? What are the other ones?... qwned...owned...at least "owned" makes sense.

Whenever I see some one type any of those stupid mangled words my respect for them immediately diminishes. Although noob doesn't bother me as it is at least a phonic abbreviation where as pwn3d is moronic.

I tend to do my best to keep interweb/reality separate. I don't usually make those kinds of mistakes, thankfully. :) Except I occasionally almost say "berb" instead of "be right back" :(

If i say it, it's always in a sarcastic way with friends who would understand :P I say "*****" like "pw-ned" but as one syllable.

Quite possible. I remember being called a newbie when I started a job telemarketing once, several years ago.

And I seem to remember once calling one of my guitarists a noob. :o

I've also used "owned" in real life a couple of times. Which is ironic, because I almost never use it on the internet.

That's because "ownage" by its very definition is so much more visible in real life, with real people, than it will ever be on an internet forum. We have to rely on pictures of cats stuffed into water bottles to use the word, or someone saying something that makes a fool of themselves here. Outside of cyb4rsp4ce, all you have to do is look out the window from time to time, and you'll be preesented with plenty of ownage from stupid people doing stupid things. ;)
