Suggest places for me to visit in London and Paris
2004-05-10, 5:33 AM #1
In a couple of weeks, I'll be going to visit a friend who currently lives in London. We may also make take the train to visit Paris for a few days. I'd appreciate suggestions for places to visit, restaurants to eat at, and other things to do, from people who either live in London/Paris or have been there before. I'll be spending about 9 days total in London, and 2 or 3 in Paris.

Also, London -ians (Maeve, James Bond, etc, I know there are more of you but I cant remember who exactly) if we could organize something like going out to dinner at a resturaunt one night or something, that would be cool.

Are you looking to just see the sights? If so I can suggest some things for you in Paris...

- Climb the Eiffel Tower. Dont bother going to the top, the view is actually better from the middle level.
- Walk down the Champs Elysees, just so you can say you have. There's some good shopping (if you can afford it), too.
- Take a bus or train (the Metro system is fantastic, trains run literally every minute peak time) out to Versailles. It's a bloody big and impressive palace, and worth seeing.
- If you like the whole Chateaux (castle) thing, go on a tour of the Loire Valley where the best Chateaux in France are. Chambord and Chenonceaux are probably the pick of the bunch.
- Take at least half a day to wander around Montmatre. Buy a bageutte with ham and cheese or whatever and eat it sitting of the steps of Sacre Coeur for one of the best views of Paris.
- If you liked stained-glass and cathedrals, you cant really go past Notre Dame, arguably the most famous church in the world. It is rather impressive. If you walk around the Isle de la Cite a bit you should find Sainte Chapelle, a nice little chappel which has walls almost entirely made of stained-glass. Quite the architectural feat.
- Visit a boulangerie patisserie (bakery) at least once. There's nothing quite like French baked goods. Try a pain-au-chocolat, or a real french eclair. There's just something about the way French bake things that makes them so tasty.
- If you like art at all, you cant go past The Louvre. It's fricken massive, so get a map and find the works you're interested in. Some of the most famous pieces of art in the world are in The Louvre. The Musee D'Orsay is really interesting if you like imrepssionist art (Van Gough, Picasso etc.).
- Eat. The French are wonderful chefs. Dont forget wine and cheese, 2 local specialities.

There is a hell of a lot in Paris to see. I lived there for over 3 years yet came nowhere near seeing all the sights.

Plant a massassian flag on top of the eiffel tower and yell "I'M THE KING OF THE WORLD!". Always wanted to do that.

Agreed, though the Mona Lisa is a bit disappointing, and almost impossible to get to through the crowd.

In London, I suggest seeing the Tower, Big Ben, and just walking around Picadilly Circus . There are also some good shows in London. I saw Phantom of the Opera, but was a little disappointed. Perhaps Les Mis might be a better show...

I could make a really crude joke about places to visit in Paris...but I won't. I'm sure you've all seen the video.

yep, what maeve said^^^^ exams are a b****

most of the good places have already been pointed out, but we have a good student bar on campus and between the two of us probably know of a good few other "english" pubs in london which would be worth a visit and a drink...or two...

In London, go see Abbey Road... there's nothing that great about it other than it's Abbey Road.

The Portabello Road market is fun.

Paris... river cruise at night, leaves from a dock near the Eiffel tower.

I live near London in Guildford. London is mostly ugly, loud, and smelly from what I remember, but that may just be the people. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I've been to London loads of times (just up the road from here), and went to Paris for a few days last year.

Go see the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, just so you can tell everyone just how unimpressive it really is. It is so anti-climatic, you walk around looking at this gianormous, amazing paintings, then you find yourself in this room with this tiny little picture at one side, surrounded by snapper-happy chinese tourists.

One thing you must absolutely do in both cities is not rely too heavily on the metro / underground. The best way to see a city is to walk around it, get a feel for the atmosphere and scale, not just train-hop from one tourist trap to the next. Both cities have huge rivers running through them, so they are easy to find their way around. First night in Paris, me and my mate walked from Eiffel tower, across the Seine, through the Trocadero, to the Arc de Triomphe, then followed the river East, seeing the Louvre, Place de la Concorde and Notre Dame (others as well), all the way to Gare de Lyon where we took a train journey back to our hotel. Most of these attractions are flood-lit, so you absolutely have to see them at night (the Eiffel Tower in particular).

No way. I mean the view isn't necessarily greater, but it's just the feeling of being so high.

After coming back from Paris, I spoke to several people who had been before and I was amazed that none of them had even bothered to go to the top (most hadn't even gone up it at all).

Very true. Paris is spectacular by night. Probably one of the best ways to take it in is a cruise on one of the many tourist boats down the Seine.
