have you ever tried to break one? Its nearly impossible! Today i took a metal baseball bat to one, three times as hard as i could, i could not break it, only the cover, supposedly they are bullet proof.

I know someone that went rock climbing, and his friend chucked his water bottle off to the side. Sure it shattered upon impact, so the guy went to the store and got it replaced.

I actually dropped one of mine off a not-quite-vertical cliff and it bounced all the way down, didn't break, just got smashed looking. I know for a fact they aren't bullet-proof though ;)

So that does that mean if you shoot one and take it back to the place of purchase, they'll give you a new one? :p

I friend of mine put either some vinegar and baking soda or some dry ice and water in one and screwed the top on. It blew up after 10 minutes, much to the dismay of their dog, who happened to be sniffing it at the time.

Originally, Nalgene bottles were made for storing chemicals in laboratories. That's why many of them have Volumetric Meters on the sides. Scientists started taking the bottles home and using them to store drinking water, juice, soda, etc. Eventually, the company caught on and started marketing the bottles for personal use.

They also make restraints to hold down animals for testing. Ironic that they're so popular among hippies, huh?

Was I the only one who had to google search just to find out what a "nalgene waterbottle" is?

A freind and I were hanging out in the gym/cafe last period before leaving, he decided to throw it as hard as he could against the wall since the place was empty and no one could yell at him.

It shattered, and made a really loud noise. Water splattered. People game. He was bottless

the clear part rarely breaks, yeah, but the black plastic lid is the part that breaks most of the time.

Nalgene waterbottles are waterbottles made of polycarbonate, trade name Lexan. It's the most impact resistant plastic, or at least clear plastic in existance, last I checked. At 1/4" thick it will stop low powered bullets, at higher thicknesses it will stop higher powered bullets. It will never stop something like a high powered armor piercing rifle round because it's a soft material in nature. Easy to cut and drill, and easy to puncture, but not break. If I recall they're using it more and more in bullet resistant glass...glass is an important component since it's so damn hard.

Anyway, supposedly polycarbonate doesn't take on any odors or flavors like more traditional plastics. That's the main thing I like about them, since I hate the plastic flavor. The indestructability is also great for more extreme stuff. Although under the right conditions, they can shatter (pressure from the inside out like Obi mentioned could do it).

By the way, anyone know if there are Nalgene biking waterbottles?

My poly carbonate lenses in my glasses are about three times less thick than they would be if they were made of glass.

Oh, and they're impossible to break.

Yep. Unfortunately, easy to scratch. I'm not sure if there are any truely effective scratch resistant coatings available for consumer glasses. There is certainly a demand for them for optical storage, especially as it's possible to store terrabytes on CD sized optical disks, they'll be supersensative to scratches.

The scratch resistant coating on my glasses is pretty good.

Take this example.

The other night, I hit myself in the face with a car door, right on the lense... no scratch on the lense.... but I did cut the crap out of my nose.. :P

My mom ran over her nalgene bottle in her car and it didn't break. Not even a scratch.

Aye, and they'll send you a new lid if you call them up and tell them the lid broke.
