Downtime Update

On June 9th around 1pm Pacific or so the data center in which the Massassi server is hosted had a power outage. SUPPOSEDLY they have backup power generators but APPARENTLY the switch that is supposed to cut from public power to generator power failed and it took them I GUESS something like 10 HOURS to fix the problem. I have the feeling they didn't actually fix the problem, but rather they just waited for public power to come back on.

When the power was finally back on, the server didn't boot properly due to a faulty config (sort of my fault). The problem, however, is that it's set up to disallow remote login until such time as the entire bootup process finishes, which it never did because it was stuck due to the faulty config. So anyway, it took them a couple of HOURS to log in from there and remove the fault config to let me log on.

The faulty config has been fixed, but I'm still trying to figure out why it won't let me log in to the SSH server until after the web server starts. That is just moronic.

Wow. During the downtime I joked to one friend that Brian forgot to pay his electricity bill, and thus the servers went down. I hit quite close to the mark...

your init script is written incorrectly if your apache service is started before the SSHD service.

Just flip em around in the script should fix it.

Um no, sshd starts first and it authenticates connections but immediately terminates the connection after a connection is made IF the rest of the init scripts haven't finished running. It's completely moronic.

I had no idea what was going on, thanks for clearing that up!:D
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

I'm sorry; it was my shift to run on the wheel and I got tired. This is why I need to get into better condition. :o

I almost died; thought my soul would be lost forever. (please tell me you backed up our souls :))

I was forced to read a book, which I guess wasn't that bad, but it took a while to realise there was no 'on' button or a scroll wheel to turn the pages.

Oh, okay, I thought you meant it wasn't starting at all.

I think there is an option that needs to be in the initscript so that any failed services are backgrounded, finishing the init much faster. I'll look into it.
