Date Format
2005-06-11, 1:17 PM #1
This may well have already been discussed since the forum change, but I thought I'd ask anyway-

Since we can now view the time in our own timezones, isn't it possible to have an option to change the date format? the MM/DD/YY thing is really confusing.

I agree. I always have to look at the thing three times before i get it right.
2005-06-11, 1:32 PM #3
Silly Brits. :D

Depends how ingrained the date format is. If it's repeated every time the date appears... no chance. If "MM/DD/YY" is a constant somewhere, then it would be easy to make it a normal variable and put a per-member option in.

2005-06-11, 1:44 PM #4
I'm pretty sure the effort required to do this on our own would not make it worth it. Sorry. I'll look to see if someone else has done it already, and if they've released their work as a vbulletin mod.
2005-06-11, 1:45 PM #5
As far as I know the mm/dd/yy in vB is displayed via date(), so I'm guessing with a bit of work (adding a few more flags in member database entries, some cookie/session values, etc) you could have it decide which format to use in the date() via a conditional. But who wants to do that?

All times are stored in the database as unix ticks in seconds (number of seconds from a certain date, I forget the date and the signifigance of it) and are converted whenever someone accesses a thread and the scripts build it to be displayed.
2005-06-11, 1:57 PM #7
I know it is possible to change the date/time format in the user settings in phpBB using the date() arguments... but this isn't phpBB.

Yeah, like I said .. vB uses date() to do that, and in all likeliness (almost always) the format that date() outputs is hardcoded into the actual call and not a variable that you can change somewhere.

Sim: it shouldn't matter, because vB runs on php as well .. unless I'm misunderstanding you

Oh no, our little chat didnt inspire this, did it Maevie? I already told you, you put the month first so you immediately get an idea of what time of year it is. If you put the day first, its like "well thanks but I need the month if I wanna know what it was like outside."

sheesh.

QFT. I prefer that, but I can live with DD/MM/YY if necessary. Those are the only two ways that make sense.

For those who disagree, I ask: do you also write the time mm:ss:hh?

EDIT: haha, QFT is censored

Honestly, it is so much more logical to have it day month year, because it's in sequence. From smaller unit of time upwards. I just think it makes more sense overall. But I've gotten use to this system. Both systems are fine for what they are, doesn't really affect me greatly, but I agree with Maevie, people (especially those outside of the U.S.) should have alternatives.

December 31, 1969, at 23:59:59. The current Unix time is '1118539885', which is the number of seconds that have passed since the aforementioned date.

I like:
MM/DD/YY - all the time
DD/MM/YY - if the month is spelled out in letters; if it's all numbers in this format I get confused (because it's not the system that was "engrained" in my head)

Hrm, I've been to forums that allow you to specify your own date format. Lame that this does not. Perhaps the version 3.x allows that, we will move over at some point probably... We just have to manually change the styling again because they don't have a style converter.
2005-06-11, 10:29 PM #21
Oh no, whenever brian says we'll move or upgrade to a new forum system, the next 4 to 5 years will be littered with speculation as to when we will move or upgrade to a new forum system

The two formats I prefer after 16 years in the Army are:

YYYYMMDD (or YYMMDD) as in 19701210

and

DDMMMYYYY (or DDMMMYY) as in 10DEC1970

Of course, being American, MM/DD/YYYY (or MM/DD/YY) comes natural. I can work with DD/MM/YYYY no problem. You just have to have something as a frame of reference. Like I'll need to see some days higher than twelve at least once so I know which format I'm working with.

Then there's DTG (date time group) which goes DDTTTTMMMYYYY where "T" is 24 hour time as in 011900JAN2006 being 1900 on January 1st, 2006.

YYYY or YY/MM/DD is better for sorting thoughb. DD/MM/YY sucks for sorting.. you have the first of every month grouped together, then the second, then the third...

Today is Sunday, 12 June 2005.

(how I write dates)

And yeah, I thought vB had an option of setting your own date format. You had to type it in like the PHP date format and your dates can look ANY way you look.

This vB suuuucks.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

ROFL.

MM/DD/YY really makes the most sense. The year isn't all that important, since we usually know what year it is. Month shoiuld come first because thats the most important one really.
2005-06-12, 2:27 PM #34
actually YY/MM/DD makes the most sense to me, because we already arrange time like that (HH:MM:SS). But I've been brought up with MM/DD/YY, seeing anything else confuses me until I realize it's not MM/DD/YY.

2005-06-12, 2:29 PM #35
MM/DD/YY.

But I have no idea why Day/Month/Year isn't used, that seems more logical.

DD/MM/YYYY much better.

Could you change the date format for the whole site to something like

June 13 2005? Then i wont get confused when I see 6/13/05 :p Also, everyone would be happy.

For computer dates, YYYYMMDD is the best because you can do a natural sort and it will be all good :)
