Going back to the point about running with iPods, HDs etc, I'd like to point out that iPods only access the HD once every half houer or so (unless you skip a lot).

It accesses the HD, quickly copies the next half hour's worth of playlist to flash memory and plays from there. That's (a) why it's good for running (b) got decent battery life and (c) why it the battery does falter if you skip tracks a lot, and more so if you change your mind about an album because it would copy album X to the HD, then expect a half hour break from intensive battery draining work but instead have to copy across album Y instead.

But anyways, apples are pretty, and I might buy me an iBook with my first few month's pay...

(and I love my 4th gen 20G iPod, he is called William)

I've seen smaller MP3/OGG (yeah, OGG) players, WITH screens. One was about the size of 3 matchstick packs.

But hey, if you are happy with an inferior product... ;)

I pointed out the caching and access times earlier in one of my post. That's one reason it still takes quite a while for the wear to have any effect.

And yeah, don't go playing lossless on them either. =P

And you can call it an inferior product all you want. I've messed with lots of different types, and I think quite differently.

Sorry, I'm a bit knackered and was skim reading, I should've picked that up!

Martyn is hot.

So is my battery life less since I use 192kbps instead of 128kbps? It would have to access the HD more often, right?

The shuffle is smaller than that still, and is still a viable player. Shut up CM, your constant apple bashing gets old.

Yeah, but 192 kbps over 120 kbps isn't going to affect it nearly as much as constantly skipping around through tracks does. I know I've cut the 18 hour rated battery life down to about 6 or so from skipping around a ton.

If you load up a play list, will it load each track on the list, or does it only do that with albums?
2005-06-18, 8:24 PM #51
It'll cache things in the successive order of whatever you're playing them from. Playlist, album, genre, whatever. Any time you're playing them in any situation where it puts them in some order, it will cache the successive stuff in that order.
