found. Microsoft is so full of these little 'flaws', aren't they....?

Hehe. Microsoft, while being full of flaws itself, is just the company that makes them. Er... Windows.

*sigh*

The article kept referring to it as a vulnerability in Windows. It is not. Its a hole in IE. If you dont use IE, your safe. Funy how MS never mentions that. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif] [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Well, I guess they assume that everyone uses IE (right....) , and this is not to start a browser war.

Or they assume Internet Explorer is an integral part of every networking OS they've released since the late 1990s and they assume, rightfully, that the overwhelming majority of computer users - even Macintosh owners - will be using some version of Internet Explorer.

Oh, and GBK... there's no guarantee that you'll be safe even if you don't use IE. A lot of programs use the HTML COM object and there are legal, documented ways of accessing those objects even though they may be instantiated by a different process. The only way to guarantee that you'll be safe from any Internet Explorer exploit is by using Linux. So really the only practical solution is to keep your Windows rig up to date and buy a decent hardware firewall.

No, I dont want to start a browser war, and I would be quit sad if this devolved into one. I was, however, pointing out that CNN was incorrectly pointing the blame at Windows, when IE is clearly at fault.

Oops, jonc beat me to what I wanted to say. Even if you don't use IE, it's embedded into a thousand other programs (things like gamespy, html editors with built in previews, rss news readers, MICROSOFT WORD, etc.). Hell, I just started playing City of Heroes and it's built into the auto-updater to show you news releases as it is updating. So yes, the only way to be sure you're not vulnerable is to get all the patches for IE - but of course, that's no guarantee either.

That was patched a while ago, so I don't see what makes it such a big deal.

Of course so were many other vulnerabilities, and since people were too lazy to patch them, they got hit with stuff that was easily avoidable. You can't blame MS for that, you can only blame the user.

You spelled it Microft yet I still read Microsoft. Heh... I didn't even notice until I read it again on the topics page.
