Something I will never understand about the media & wars

is why the hell they do news reports on everything like war related. or why the miltary even tells people about it. why give full coverage on a US-led major operation in Iraq or Afghanistan? doesnt that kind of take away the surprise part? its like yelling "hey, we're gonna come attack your strongholds now so be ready!"im sure the enemy can read yahoo or find out what they're saying on CNN somehow, heh

what really gets me is why the hell they say things like "We are almost positive we think we know where Bin laden is!" ... so, if you were bin laden, would you sit there and take the risk or would you move to a different place?.. id bet #2 .. like if they think they know where he is why dont they keep their mouth shut and FIND him already

make sense to anyone else?

I'd still want a true MTV (Military Television) to see battles live.

...

Yeah.

However, that's a good point there. However, not all of them can watch/read CNN stuff, perhaps. Or something.

It's the same mentality that drives statements like "lolz im in ur base, killing ur d00ds!!!"

And about the same intelligence level too.

Imagine if the media reported on the beaches of Omaha like it does in Falluja. If it weren't for the fortitude of people back then, we'd have had rallies in the streets to bring the troops home
A desperate disease requires a dangerous remedy.

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

This is all assuming the media is telling the truth. They can say troops are building up in location X while they're actually in location Y.

They can also say that the president is focusing on the economy or whatever and then next day's paper says that the day before he had a surprise visit to Iraq.

It may sound paranoid, but strategically it's just bad to tell the public (and incidentally the enemy) the truth on TV, radio, or as you said, Yahoo.

The media can sometimes be a useful tool to governments around the world, including the USA.

Things is real life aren't as simple as that. There are two reasons for the information being shown on TV and elsewhere: Military released it knowing perfectly what they were doing, or somebody leaked something out, and the reporters were just doing their job by reporting it immediately.

And if Bin Laden happens to have found a perfect hiding place, it might be wise to tell the world suddenly that the military has found him, and will soon strike. That might make Mr. BL hesitate in his hole and choose to change his apartment. The new place might not be so good, or somebody might see him on his way there, making a real strike possible.

Times have changed. People want information. They want to know what's going on. If they don't get the info, they suspect something is going awry, and in that case the goverment would suffer the consequences soon enough.

Fortitude isn't something that one generation has more of than another. If you really believe that, then prove it. Also, you don't know what they would have done. Because it never happened.

The wars being 'fought' are also massively differing in their origin and in their purpose. One was a war to stop a man from taking over the free world. The other is a 'war' (I say so because of countless Iraqi lives taken as compared to American lives) to 'end terrorism'.
