I don't get it HELP :(

Here is the sum of the individual parts and the total... it doesn't help any...

Areas:

Red - 12
Orange - 7
Green - 8
Blue - 5
-----------
Total - 32

Top Triangle - 32.5
Bottom Triangle - 31.5

[Edit: I think I got it, actually! But I will spare you the solution and let you go INSANE.]

Because the slope isn't exactly the same, it cuts through enough squares to equal one full one.

Yeah. That's what I got too. :)

but if the base and height are the same for both, how can the slope be different?

The individual slopes of the red and green triangles don't change. But their combined slope.
Sorry for the lousy German

Because it's not a triangle.

The gradient of the red triangle is 0.375 units, the gradient of the dark green one is 0.4 units.

Uh... sorry, I just finished Grade 10. We didn't cover gradients in academic. PLEASE don't try to explain. I'm just sayin'. :)

It's just another word for "slope."

He means the slope of the hypotenuse of the right triangles.

right. yes, that was my point. if the triangles making up the triangle all had the same gradients, it wouldn't be possible. but yeah, that makes sense. thanks for the illustration, DS

I couldn't figure it out either.
