AC expansion open beta.

I figured some of the old AC'ers might be interested in this. Now honestly what I've seen from this expansion, it looks like crap, but, the preview's free, so...

Does require a credit card for verification, but no charge of course, also doesn't require an existing turbine account or game subscription. Unfortunately only Leafcull characters transfer to the beta server, but I read that there will be ways to level up instantly to test higher level stuff.

I'm gonna at least give it a try to waste some time (even though I know 100% I will not buy it when it comes out).

That would be cool except for the fact that you can only download it if you're registered at FilePlanet (gimme a break).
2005-06-22, 1:36 PM #3
Ok... And what's wrong with registering at FilePlanet? That takes all of two minutes maybe...

Damnit Darth, you beat me to it.

That's where you get your fat CD key.

Btw, Al, have you seen Paraducks i33t preview of TD? You get to see him kill stuff!

I'll be making a character named Ibn Flank. You can swear to me if you want. :)

I saw a crappy movie that looked like running around on the old AC landscape with new trees... Whoop-de-do.

Turbine really needed to take a lesson from Mythic when it comes to trying to "upgrade" their graphics.

Why should I have to give gamespy/IGN my information to sign up for a so-called "public" beta? Forget it. I get enough spam as it is.
2005-06-22, 2:17 PM #7
That's funny. The email account I've had tied to my Fileplanet account for the past few years never gets any spam, from Fileplanet or otherwise...

All 3 of mine do. Because I forget passwords.

Regardless, why should I have to provide IGN/Gamespy with my personal information to download some software they don't even own? The whole idea of this is crap, and I'm not going to do it. You have to register at Massassi -only- to post comments. You don't have to register to read our content, read our forums, download files, etc. It makes no sense any other way - if they are collecting this information, they are certainly doing it for a reason. You do know that if they ever go out of business, the first asset they will sell will be their huge list of email addresses and personal information, right? Did you ever read their privacy policy? Here are some highlights:
Quote:
When you register for membership on an IGN Site or activate a related service by clicking on a particular service link (i.e. email) on an IGN Site, you may be automatically registered to receive the services we offer and some of your Personal Information may be transferred from IGN to those third-party service providers. By becoming a member, you authorize us and our third-party service providers to send you email updates and information about promotions and special offers.
Quote:
We share Personal Information with game owners/publishers that offer such services to enable those entities to operate the services you have elected to receive. Game owners/publishers may also use Personal Information for other business purposes, provided that such use shall be in compliance with the terms of this Policy, except that a game owner/publisher (a) will not contact you or otherwise use or transfer your Personal Information, unless you have expressly consented. Upon giving such consent your Personal Information will be subject to the game owner's/publisher's privacy policy.
Quote:
IGN may send you emails on behalf of our advertisers. If you opt to receive information from our advertisers they may use your Personal Information to send you advertisements or other notices, via email or postal mail, and it is possible that your information may be shared with others.
Quote:
We occasionally provide third parties with Personal Information limited only to your physical address in order to send you promotional mailings.
Quote:
If you choose to enter sweepstakes, contests or promotions sponsored by a third party, the Personal Information you provide will be subject to the privacy policy of the third party sponsor.
Quote:
In the event of a merger, acquisition, reorganization, sale of all or substantially all of its assets, or the sale of an individual website owned by IGN, IGN may transfer your Personal Information to a third party as a part of such merger, acquisition, reorganization, or sale.
Sounds like a "full disclosure to whoever we want whenever we want policy" instead of a "privacy policy" to me. Now read Massassi's:
Quote:
If you are concerned about your privacy, please know that we do not give out any information. In fact, we barely even collect any information. All we require is a User Name (most people choose a nickname rather than their real name) and an email address. We store the email address so we can mail you your password if you lose it.

Whoop-de-do, they have a hotmail account that I only use for random crap. I feel so violated...

Um, they ask for more than an email address, and, uh, signing up for hotmail means I'm signing up for two different places asking for my personal information. No thanks. And you didn't even respond to any of the points I made so this discussion is obviously pointless. Have a nice day.

That's what throwaway (heck, dodgeit.com) email addresses are for.

They ask for an email address, a birthday, and a name, which can easily be made up... They're not asking for mailing addresses and phone numbers even (they're are spaces there, but they're optional).

And I don't really care about your paranoia enough to try and argue with you about it. That's what seems utterly pointless to me.
2005-06-22, 3:44 PM #14
I think I'm going to make downloading on Massassi require registration and personal information for Darth only :)
2005-06-22, 4:03 PM #15
I download stuff from here? That's news to me.

And a birthday that can be faked, a name that can be faked, and an email address that can be from anywhere != personal information.

I don't have the time to devote to WoW these days. Not to mention all those games bore me to death in no time anymore.

Only messing with this cause it's free. And I kinda want to laugh at how bad it is.

Dude. My name is Ibn Flank... send me a tell... I'm level 60 and b-o-r-e-d.

I'll be on within the next 30 minutes or so hopefully.

So it let you start out at level 60? Interesting, I was expecting it to go higher actually.
2005-06-22, 9:23 PM #21
Well, spending the last three hours downloading this was obviously a poor idea. Bad enough that I'm asked for my address and other stuff I had to make up by Fileplanet, but Turbine wants my CREDIT CARD INFORMATION??? Yeah, umm, I have a credit card, but I'm not in the habit of revealing said information to entities with whom I am not entering a business relationship.

Hell, if I liked the game I may have bought it... Not happening now, though.

Pretty sure that was mentioned in the very first post of this thread, Matty...

If you expect me to read all of those words before coming in here and complaining about things, then you're sorely mistaken! :)

P.S. Oops!

P.P.S. It's still annoying though...
