The website is almost right. A server isn't necesarily a computer, a server is a program.
There are webservers like Apache or Microsoft's Internet Information Server, there are mailservers like Postfix or Sendmail or there are chatservers like IRCd and many other kinds of servers.
Even Windows 2000/XP have many servers running per default for different purposes.

Actually, Impi, those are "Services" in Windows. IIS = Internet Information Services. And in linux, they are commonly referred to as "daemons", not "servers". Although its really a matter of taste in how you use the word server, most people use it to refer to the computer itself.

The issue I have with this thread is the thread creator "yodason45" NEVER replies to any of his threads! He asks a question, then never returns. Man that is incredibly annoying.

Hope you've realised that Server is to with Networking. Don't. That is all I've had enough of network as it was I did at college for the past year. Did coursework on it, studied it, heard about and...

im fed up with hearing about networking
Control is the real mechanism behind everything that is slug on the backburner.

A service or daemon is not necessarily used in a network. You can also have them bound to localhost only.

yodason needs to read this: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
before posting any more threads, methinks.

Last time I checked this wasn't The Dictionary Temple .

My biggest gripe with that smart questions article is the author's Linux superiority complex. It's a good article otherwise.

No No, it's the person who initiates play in a tennis match.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.
