Neglected infant dies while parents play WoW

Sorry if it's been posted before (article is dated June 14th). Read about it here.

I've heard of people dying of "gaming overdoses" in those South Korean computer cafes before (read about one middle aged man who played CS for 14 hours straight without eating/drinking then went to the bathroom and died) but this is the first time I've heard of it indirectly killing someone else. People's priorities are really messed up to let things like this happen. Having a kid is a big responsibility a lot of people just aren't up to handling.

And a comment which I'm sure will derail discussion prematurely: I didn't even think WoW was that good of a game.

Um, if you read the article they left the kid at home and went to an internet cafe.

If it was indeed SIDS (I don't know what it could be if not SIDS, though don't take my word for it because I'm not an expert), I don't think the parents could have prevented the baby's death had they stayed at home. (Putting the baby on her back instead of her stomach could have prevented it, but it sounds like they probably didn't know about that.)

I'm not saying that wasn't terribly irresponsible, it's just not necessarily the reason the baby died.

I think some kids were left in a car and died due to EverQuest but I can't remember for sure. A few people did commit suicide because of EQ though. Hurray!

There was a TV program (like 60 minutes or something) on gaming addiction with a focus on EverQuest. Ben Stein (I think that's the guy) put his son in military school to get him off EQ and talked a bit during the program. I remember sitting in Grimling Forest while it was on, relaying chat with guildmates about people's (who were in game and watching the program and talking in public channels about it) reactions. Was loads of fun and galvanized our bond as EQ players; we all realized we played too much and loved the game.

On a more anti-WoW train of thought, I hope the media goes nuts and some stupid law is passed against WoW. ^_^

Dunno if this is a repeat (sorry if so) but there was this report on the news about year ago.

Some teenaged kid took his father's shotgun and ran to the highway. He shot out the window of a car, killing the driver and one of the passengers, I believe.

I'm not sure if this information is entirely accurate, as it happened a long time ago, but I'm certain that the kid shot and killed at least two people. After getting arrested, he admitted that he got the idea from Grand Theft Auto III. Or maybe it was Vice City... but definitely one of those two.

If anyone else knows about this incident, and that my information is wrong, plz correct me! :(

On another note, that article about the Korean baby said it suffocated. Perhaps the baby put something large in his mouth, and it fell out after the baby died. Or perhaps the baby put his head inside a plastic bag and suffocated there, and the plastic bag fell off. I don't know, but "SIDS" is not a medical condition, it's a term for the unexplained death of an infant, right? I find it hard to believe that the baby's body just shut down for no reason. It doesn't happen...

Man, I haven't heard from my relatives in Asia in awhile...

:D

Though that does suck the baby died.
How stupid are the freaking parents to care about WoW more then their baby and leave it for 5 freaking hours?!

If you read the linked wikipedia article about SIDS, you'll see that it's not a condition, but only used to describe deaths that are of a unknown cause. The bottom of the article brushes over one interesting theory about the cause of SIDS.

2005-06-24, 11:26 AM #23
By its own definition, there is no "cause", only a lot of multiple causes. I'm pretty sure SIDS deaths did not all occur for the same reason.

I love how people criticise people who post on a forum when the person himself is posting on one at the exact same time, AND trying to make a plausable argument.
