In the 1960's..George A. Romero created "Night of the Living Dead" Considered the first "real" Zombie Film.

In the 1970's George A. Romero made "Dawn of the Dead" a sequel to his first zombie film.

In the 1980's George A. Romero made "Day of the Dead" the 3rd chapter in his Zombie Saga.

Now..George A. Romero, the god of all things Zombie has returned to create "LAND OF THE DEAD".

So how many people went to the midnight showing of Land of the Dead?

People think it is going to be/is as good as Romero's other work?

Too much (of a weak) story, not enough zombies.

I just got back from it. I thought it was definately the best of the newer films. I really liked the underlying social commentary along with the violent action.

I hear it's pretty good but nothing like everyone made it out to be. I want to see it, but I figured I'd ask everyone here what they thought of it.

Haven't seen it, probably don't have much hope of seeing it in theaters. (No transportation) I'll probably catch it on HBO.

Just gotta know, is the Steyr Aug in the full movie or is it discarded after the scenes in the trailer? :D

I can't wait to see this puppy. I may go tonight or tomorrow.
Anyway, I don't care if it's worse than I expected or not. I love the series and Romero knows what he's doing. Unfortunately, he's not always able to make what he wants because of restrictions and budgets. I read the original script for Day of the Dead and I absolutely LOVED it. It was said to be like Ben-Hur with zombies because it was so huge. And although the final cut of Day of the Dead was good too, I would've like the original more. Hopefully, if he makes another one after this, I hope it takes place in Virginia (maybe dealing with government agencies), cause I really want to be a zombie extra.

On a completely different topic, you, Quinn Mallory, are a Sliders fan.

And for this I love you.

You should definitely check them out. I haven't seen Day of the Dead, but the other two are really cool. Night of the Living Dead is a real classic, with all the essential elements of the survival horror/zombie genre (even though White Zombie came out in the 1930s, Night is still seen as the beginning of real zombie movies). Dawn of the Dead (the original) is just... bizarre. There are some really odd illogical moments and with the soundtrack it's easily the funniest zombie movie I've seen. I'm still not sure whether it was intended to be, which is the best part - it has an Ed Wood quality to it.

The way I see it with zombie movies is that's usually a win/win scenario, regardless of the film's quality. If it's scary, then it's a good horror movie. If it's not scary, then it's a good comedy movie. You can't lose with zombies.

(On a side note, White Zombie isn't bad either... the basic plot is that Bela Lugosi turned all his enemies into zombies so that they would work on his tobacco plantation in Cuba. He also kidnaps tourists for some reason, and I think he might be a vampire in this one. Yes, that is all one movie... I didn't even mention the hypnotism.)

In general, I like zombie movies. I liked 28 days later, I liked dawn of the dead, I liked both resident evil movies - they are just so entertaining!

So... I just got back from Land of the Dead. It was disappointing. And now the spoiler tag for the longest spoiler section of all time:

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

It wasn't a zombie movie, zombies just happened to be there. It was mostly about social stratification with some action sequences thrown in to vaguely keep your attention. I didn't like any of the characters. Initially I liked the gas station leader zombie, after his friends get shot up and he screams... that was cool, in addition to seeing the inhumane treatment of the zombies it gave them character... which ended up being a problem because the zombies weren't zombies once they could think and feel.

Instead of being hordes of undead without thoughts or feelings but just cravings for flesh we end up with regular human characters that just happen to be cannibals, mentally challenged and dead (this last trait being the least important). They were just another post-apocalyptic faction fighting for resources.

Characters...

The main guy looked like Jason Bateman. This is all I could think of when he had a scene other than wondering why he never even got blood on his clothes. It was obvious from the start that he was going to survive this movie "action hero style" but at least he could have gotten dirty. Whenever he was in a scene you knew that he and everyone else near him were invulnerable.

Cholo... No. Just no. Honestly, how did they justify naming him that? His weapons were as ridiculous as his motives. So.. he's going to ransom the city and then do what with the money?

Dennis Hopper. Aim for the head. I kept wanting to yell this every time he picked up his pea shooter. And did he have to get all the "funny" lines?

The main zombie (again). I wish he died, but apparently if you're a gas station attendent zombie you get a +999999 to all saves. they could drop a nuke on him and, while it would decimate his minions, all he would do is scream irritably in the aftermath. I also liked when he used the gas pump towards the end, it was almost touching seeing how confused he seemed to be about the whole ordeal (until he came back with the flaming paint can (???) and blew it up.

Too many of these character survived. That made me more bitter than anything. And I'm obviously bitter. :)

On a lighter note, my favorite line:

"The hell was that? Screaming practice?"

whew. There are other things but I've reached my zombie-related spamming quota for today. (and why is google advertising silk robes now at the bottom??) ah caffeine is making me edit-happy.

I thought he liked the remake. He was involved in it's making if I recall.

He admired the fact that someone liked his film enough to remake it, but I'm not sure if he helped in its creation or not. Also, he decided to make a fourth Dead film long before the Dawn of the Dead remake, so it wasn't because he didn't like the remake.

He never worked on the 2004 edition of Dawn of the Dead, just like he never worked on the 1991 version of Night of the Living Dead.

Masq, you really must see Dead Alive if you thought the original Dawn of the Dead was funny. And all of the Dead movies are Romero's criticism of society, Land was just a little more blunt (which isn't a good thing).

My GF and I saw it last night and were both disappointed. It was nothing more than a semi-humorous gore-fest with no real plot and some of the worst acting that I've seen in recent times. We didn't expect much in the acting department, and knew that it would be rather humorous, but there just didn't seem to be ANY redeeming value to the film.
2005-06-26, 1:31 PM #39
The problem was it wasn't enough of a gore fest. It was too much of a "terrorists aren't that bad, we're actually the *******s" movie.
