US med schools

Brothers!

I'm on the edge of making the switch from psychology to medicine. I'm also on the edge of making the switch from Belgium to the US (for a while - for my academics, and to broaden my views). I'm thinking maybe somewhere in California. New York is incredibly tempting as well. Haven't figured it out yet.

How do students get accepted into med school in the US? Over here there's a huge entry exam - is there one over there, or does everyone get accepted no problemo? Do they check on background, and if so, what are they looking for?

Anyone?

California and New York are the two most liberal places in the U.S. But I'm sure you knew that. ;) Sounds really cool, Tenshu, too bad I'm of no help.

If you want a good climate, pick California. NYC is a nice place to live, but it's f***ing freezing in the winter.

Congratulations.

There is an exam for Med school in the US as well... called the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test). You can find more information out about it here:

Yeah. They like a lot of Biology before you apply too, but with a degree in Psych, you might have a pretty good shot. The MCATs are a real ***** from what I've heard from friends who have taken them.

What kind of medicine? Might want to look into Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. I hear they have some pretty crazy medical stuff, especially since they're right next to the Cleveland Clinic, one of the most advanced hospitals in the world.

If you go with California, the UC system (short for University of California) is rock solid as far as quality and name-recognition go. UCLA (Los Angeles) is pretty good on medicine, as is UCSD (San Diego). They're all good though.

I don't know about New York in particular, but the Ivy League system of universities is on that side of the U.S. Harvard is known for law and medicine, but they're all pretty awesome and more prestigeous than California's UC schools. They're also quite hard to get in to (if you're American anyway, foreign students are decently off for getting into UC schools at least).

A lot depends on how awesome of a student you are.

Heh, I just finished with this process...

All I can say about the US med school process: In the US, the med school chooses YOU!

Basics of what you need:

3.7 GPA, 3.7 sci GPA

11 Phys, 11 Bio, 10 verbal reasoning MCAT
2+ years of clinical related experience
1+ year of science or medical research
Bunch of other randm crap.

I'll lead you here:

That will be a far, far more useful resource than Massassi.

Edit: Oh, you aren't a US citizen... don't even bother applying to the UC's or any state school for that matter unless you get residence in the state you are applying in... and UCs are GOOD LORD HARD to get into.

They should have a copy of a book called the "MSAR" somewhere in your library maybe. Stands for Medical School Admissions Requirements; don't look at the averages, they are misleading due to URMs and Legacy. I'll leave you to figure out those two terms. However, look at "in state" and "out of state" acceptances for state schools; you will see a pattern, heh.

Oh yeah, and I'm going here: http://www.aecom.yu.edu/home/

Thanks for the replies.

I never intended to do the next year in the US already. I'm gonna do my entry exam here, take my classes here, and see where the year after this one leads me. Problem is, I don't know if European entry exams are equivalent to mcats. I did check the required subjects, and they're exactly the same (apart from statistics like student and chi² variables - man, you have to learn those in high school already? Respect....)

I'm gonna check out the links you gave me to see if they're the same. Thanks for the help, and burn a candle for me :em321:
