This is a real ingame screenshot of the X-Box 360's Project Gotham Racing 3 game.

While I agree that it does look quite good, there are quite a few ways to tell it isn't real. Firstly, the windows lack specular reflections. Also, I can't quite put my finger on it, it may be the camera angle, but the scale of the shot makes it look more like a model set than real buildings.

But other than that, its looking good.

Photorealistic graphics have probably been possible for years. Rather, we posses the knowhow to make it happen (or very close to). But why would you do that when you can beat the same horse for 10 years?

That is very good. I guess there might be some tell-tale signs, something about the "finish" kind of makes it look like a very well constructed diarama, and the windows, I think look a little plastic, both of which are covered in the previous poster's statement.

As long as your racing, this will look 100% real to the viewer.

The level of detail is quite impressive.

That is damn good, but yes, the lack of specularity gives it away

Why should there be specular reflections in every picture with glass in it? Doesn't look like it's supposed to be a sunny day.

Right, but the glass looks almost matte-ish. It would reflect something, whether it be residual sunlight, or car headlights, or street lamps, or even interior lighting (though I guess that would be more refraction).

At a quick glance, it looks pretty damn real.

this looks a LOT like a cardboard model, or something. in fact, it looks just WAY TOO RANDOM for something that would be in a computer game. so, eh, i don't believe this to be a real screenshot.

I think the tiles did it for me. They look perfect, and thus wrong.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

hmm... i still don't think this is an actual in-game screenie. okay, maybe it's not a photo of a house model, maybe it's just a regular photo that's been Photoshopped here and there...

however, if this *is* a real screenie, then... mmm... wow.

That's probably not in-game, shots like that have been around for years.

The sigh that says park on the left looks very much like it's been rendered. Looks particularly matte.
nope.

I hate photorealistic graphics, myself. I prefer my games to look like video games.

I have to agree with Glyde on this one. They should start calling games realism simulators when they start to look to too "real".

First thing that caught my eye was the tiles. Which look really fake. But overall, its a great render.

Racing has been directly linked to myopia, didn't you know?

I don't know what you guys are talking about. Looks real to me.

At first I thought it was gonna be one of those photoshop things, so I was looking for out of the ordinary instead of if graphics are good.

Windows do looks a little off though :\

i think the thing that gave it away was the red sign in the right lower corner.
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Eh? That's not impressive looking at all... it's very flat, with just textures providing the detail.

Realism Graphics + GTA = Never leave the house again.
2005-06-28, 11:34 AM #27
I looked at the other screens for that game and they don't look anywhere near that good.
2005-06-28, 11:40 AM #28
It looks like crappy architecture and mediocre lighting coupled with blurry, photoraped textures.

By the way, before someone asks, photoraped textures refer to those that've been taken directly from photographs.
2005-06-28, 12:56 PM #29
You could do that in JK if you could use high enough resolution textures. Photos converted to textures. I thought we'd seen the end of this blight in flight sims. It looks absolutely awful in game.
