RPG Maker 2000. I tried it years ago. Apparently there's been another version (RPGM2K3) and then a PSX game based on it, neither of which I ever tried.

[edit]Link removed. I found this on the site's FAQ after SAJN questioned its legality:

OK, here's the lowdown. To start off, RPG Maker 2000 is actually a game-making program released in Japan by a company called ASCII. They did not make an English version of the program available for America. A man named Don Miguel decided to translate the program into English so that the other billion people could understand how it works. Not only did he successfully translate it, but he released it publically on his website. Eventually, legal matters caught up with him, and he was forced to remove the files. Now, it's rumored that any site hosting the file is in wrong doing with the law. Either way, you can download the program here.
My bad. :/ [/edit]

Isn't RPG Maker 2000 illegal to download?
Think while it's still legal.

Well, there are any ways:

A simple way is to look for RPG Maker XP, but it appears to have died, I still might have a file though, no promises. Another thing you can do si look into game maker. Note: When Mark Overmars says you don't have to write a line of code, that is from his point of view. Because a simple top view game, that runs half decently need you to program or as a proggrammer would say "make macros" with GML "Game Maker Language" which are a series of built in commands that Game Maker recognizes. If you register your game maker, you get a lot of extra features, including the calling of dlls, erc... www.gamemaker.nl

I was going to suggest gametutorials.com but they seem to be charging for everything now. Bastards! The use to have a free 2d rpg tutorial.

Yes, but there are too many places left that weren't taken down where you can still get it.

I always loved RPG maker, but I couldn't bring myself to make custom stuff, I just edited the things already there and I used some spiffy sprite editor.

Some might recommend Neverwinter Nights.

Others might not.
The answer is maybe.

Ooh, Game Maker's the one I use. I made a pretty neat game, but it was simple... the unregistered ones always are. I tried to make an RPG with it once, but it was too hard. Plus, I have no idea how you can create a "save game" option. Maybe the action's there and I just missed it?

It'd be cool if you could make an RPG with JED, or something. Don't ask how, I'm just speculating.

That looks....horrible. Lego Land FTW

Hehe... Lego Island. Stupid, pointless fun.

I'm actually working on a PnP RPG game. Like Dungeons & Dragons, but much, much different, believe me. I'm even creating character sheets from scratch, and I'm doing all the artwork myself. I've been working on it forever. To date, it's all been just typing word documents, but it's coming along... I never could think of a good name for it, so I just called it The Unknown Quest, and the name stuck. I want to put it on a pc game so much...

Eternal Lands. Not only is it free, but they provide full source and art assets as well. The only thing they ask is to credit them for any of the artwork used in your version.

Best of all, they even allow you to sell it comercially with no strings attached (other then the above mentioned)...

If anyone is interested in using it as a basis for creating a MMORPG, I'll help with the design and art...

Get RPG Maker XP. I won't post the link to the download for fear of getting :banned:. Just go to www.enterbrain.com to buy a copy, then search for an english download. Also, go to RMXP.net, a great resource and forum website, which also does not endore pirating it.

Mods, feel free to remove the internet search advice if you feel it violates the COC.
