Is NEC a good brand though?
Who made you God to say "I'll take your life from you"?

Yep, NEC is a good one. I have pretty much the same burner, only an older model released when DL burners first came out. Other than being around $60, it is a great drive. It's never failed me.

Crimson: There are kits you can buy that consist of a case that can hold a harddrive/cddrive/dvddrive/etc, a power cord and a USB cord you can use to plug it into a USB port. :)

I use a DVD-ROM drive with mine.

I probably have the same one. It's like 32x CD-R/RW and 12x DVD single layer, 2.4x dual layer?

As for NEC quality...NEC has been around for some 20-30 years and is, or used to be the largest electronics manufacturer in the world. They make terrific products.

You get a mouse with it too for free... that would be a good combo if you were building a comp. Mice are cheap, but free is better!!!

I've had two NEC monitors, and I really liked them both (still have one)..this is my first NEC drive, but I'm sure it'll be fine.

I prefer Lite-On myself. There's a Lite-On with pretty much the same specs for about $5 more too, it's not like this is the greatest deal ever.

Lite-On, NEC, doesn't matter. They all use similar, sometimes exactly the same parts. You just want a company that has low failure rates, which Lite-On and NEC both do.

As for the deal, you're right, it's not that great. But it is a helpful notice for people around here that could use a DVD burner but haven't followed the market recently.

Also, just so you know, dual layer is almost pointless since the dual layer discs are like $10 a piece last I checked.

if i wanted dual layer support i could flash my NEC ND-2100AD to like a 2510 or something like that... but buying a new drive would be easier and would be faster since my burner can't properly burn DVDs any faster than 4x... it supports 8x but burning at that speed likes to cause coasters

I have a NEC burner and it often doesn't recognise blank CD-Rs I put in. Most of the time it works after I get it out and put it in several time but it's really a pain in the [swear word you can find in the name of this site].

Screw it, I'm buying this one (60 euros over here). But first, can someone vouch for it's quality? Impi's story is an exception, right?

60 EUROS? Sweet mother of god that's expensive. But NEC is a fine fine company. If nothing else, buy from a place where you can RMA it to if you have to.

OK I just found out what OEM means - would this drive be delivered without cables/software/other **** I might need? Remember, I'm no tech wiz with cables lying around in my garage. If these cables aren't delivered with the drive itself, I won't know what cables to use and if I have any.

Any information?

I think OEM means that it has exactly what you just need, not anything else (meaning extra crap like games or something). And not in a box. At least that's how I got my Audigy 2 ZS, there was just the card + gameport extension thing, some cables and the driver CD.

you won't get any cables, but you shouldn't need them. All you need is the drive--most of the time you have an open IDE slot, and you almost always have a free power cable. If not, those two together probably cost 5 or so bucks online or at your local electronics shop.

Dual layer discs are down to a little over $3 in some situations now.

Spindles of 25 just started popping up around $100-$120 though, so $4-$4.80 a piece roughly.

That's a good sign though, showing that they're finally starting to get a little more mass production and might start dropping more in price in the future.

$42.99 now.

The price itself wasn't the awesome deal -- the CD wallet was valued at $20..or the free mouse ($4.99) -- and free shipping doesn't hurt either, since some places like to charge 5-10 bucks for that..
