Remember the downtime?

Remember when the server was down for a whole night a couple of weeks ago? I just got the invoice and they credited me 80% of the cost so the server only ended up being $20 bucks for the month. Not too shabby. I almost wish they'd schedule monthly downtime and then charge me $20 :)

I had a blog. It sucked.

Not necessarily on-topic, but I liked this one more than your last "we're moving servers" one :p

Can you sneak into their server room and cause downtime yourself?

[15:30] <Brian> with the credit I will get on the account, it means the ad revenue may actually cover a month of hosting... heh
[15:30] <Brian> (credit for the downtime)

Actually yeah. We've had the ads up since may 4th, so say 2 months (till july 4th), the ad revenue will cover one full month of hosting at regular price plus the discounted month. Had we NOT had downtime, it wouldn't cover two full months. And the revenue is pretty steady so I'm not expecting it to cover hosting costs on a monthly basis, it offsets the hosting costs by about 50% I would say. So half I pay out of pocket and the other half from the ad revenue (assuming I actually get a check at some point). Not too shabby, but it's a lot less lucrative than the impressions I got from others using google ads. I think star wars ads don't perform that well or something.

A lot of us probably have it adblocked, so we never see it.

I think it's moreso the market. We are mainly young guys with very little extra money to spend, so it's not surprising.

Based on the ad impressions reported by google and the page impressions reported by our own statistics, not THAT many of you have it blocked. Regardless, I don't care whether you block them.

I also doubt many of us go in a thread, and then also click on every ad on the page.

I only clicked on one ad out of pure curiousity. Something about Darth Bush. This company was selling shirts, hats, etc. of Bush in a sith cloak with the phrase "Only a sith deals in absolutes."
Steal my dreams and sell them back to me.....

Doesn't blocking them get massassi less money?
Think while it's still legal.

So people should click them more often?

I think most members would be willing to put in the extra effort to click the occassional ad if it would save you money, Brian. It seems rather unfair that you have to pay out of your own pocket for us to sit around and ramble nonsense at eachother all day...

DO NOT CLICK MORE OFTEN. Only if you're genuinely interested because google decreases the value of the ads if a lot of useless clicking goes on to offset such a thing.

Not if you wouldn't click them to begin with (like me).
