...you used a 1.44mb floppy disk?

Last time I think I used one was little over 2 years ago to transfer a Word document to another computer. I also think I used one befoe that for carrying a NES rom.

I can't really say I had happy memories with these fragile, small pieces of hardware.

Few months back while installing Linux on a dual-boot setup as a temporary boot disc while getting the boot loaders worked out.

I used to use one to carry my coursework to and from school. It eventually crapped out on me, but fortunately it was a fair while after school had finished.

Couple weeks ago, I had to transfer a screenshot from an oscilloscope to view the results of a circuit we built in lab.

Maybe sometime from last december to last september, back when I was using Win 98 and I had to use a boot disk.

I looked at one the other day, does that count?

I used a couple about a year and a half ago to install NT on an old Z-Server EX (450DE, baby! DUAL 50Mhz processors)

Other than that... uh...

I no longer have a floppy drive installed in my main machine, and havnt for the past two, maybe three years.

A more fun question would be 5.25" floppies... Yeah, gonna have to go with somtime 1994-1995 with that one. Though I still have quite a few dozen just sitting around...

I went searching for a 5 1/4" drive a while back. I've got a bunch of old games disks, including Lemmings.

Just the other day, for the first time in years. To install a USB driver, I copied the installation over to my HD so that it'll always be there, so I won't be using it again for ages.

Many college professors require their students to use floppy disks, so I generally use them every semester. I actually had a C++ professor that required both floppies and print-outs of our code.

That's what they make online submission systems for.

Sadly we still have too many students using floppies around here to transfer stuff from their computers to lab computers, despite every student being given 100 MB of network storage and every lab machine having front-mounted USB ports...

A few days ago to run fdisk.
Before that it was about 2 weeks. I forget what I was moving, but the floppy was easier than the Lan or dealing with my iPod.

I don't trust floppy discs, too fragile and unreliable. I tend to just upload everything somewhere or just ftp straight into my uni space.

I haven't used a 5.25" disk since my 486 kicked the bucket. I think it was to install the game 'Castles'.

I used a 1.44 mb disk probably within the last couple months. I use them to transfer text documents or pictures sometimes. It's more quick than waiting to dial up to the internet, then wait for the download.

Couple months ago to transfer a powerpoint file from my jumpdrive to a 98 computer (w/o internet). Ugh made me so mad that the only computer in the school that didn't have internet runs 98.

Oh and the last time I used Floppy was... wait... no I never posted with him... :em321:

I have no idea when I last used one. None of the files I'd want to back up would ever fit on one.

A year ago. A P75 Win98 laptop had gotten stuck into an infinite loop of booting up with Wolfenstein 3D and then freezing. That was scary.

About 2 weeks ago, I think, when I reinstalled Treasure Mountain and Midnight Rescue... mostly so my brothers could play it, but I had to make sure it worked... ;)

Otherwise, not very often do I use floppies

Good question. I don't have any timeframe to answer it, but I don't think I've used a floppy since well before I got my USB disc. It's too inconvient. My laptop doesn't have a floppy drive internally and requires I use the external one in my desk drawer.

The last time I messed with my 386. I love how Space Quest 1 takes up 6 floppies. It's a fun game too.

I had to get a friend a 98 boot disk so he could help our RA out when her comp somehow formated itself during finals, and he didn't have a disk drive. I switched out the cd drive with the disk one, and the site wouldn't let me download it anyway. I forget how he finally got the boot disk.

Funny the guys at Campus IT told her there was no way to get the files and my friend got them in a few minutes, yet he can't get into a computer related major because of BS SAT stuff. Their answer to every problem is to wipe and re-image the computer, and my friend has been able to actually fix everyone's computer problems.

What about those USB jump sticks? (I actually can't remember the proper name for those things). I love these little, portable things.

I haven't used a 3 1/2" in years, probably since my first linux distro (Slackware w00). My floppy drive isn't even plugged in at the moment.

As for a 5 1/2", I don't recall ever using one. Ever. Even in school, I think we had hard drives with everything already installed.

My course culminating activity in Spanish was ruined by a 1.44mb. Damn them all.

I ended up breaking my floppy drive out of spite. *spits on the shattered remains of floppy drive*

I still use them regularly. Files that I carry usually range in size to a maximum of a few hundred kb. No reason to switch to a more powerful storage.
2005-07-02, 11:43 AM #38
Come to think of it, I did use one once. I used it several times to transfer pieces of the Game Maker 5.0 zip file from my friend's computer to mine. In the end, I got everything except the help file, which was too big for the floppy even after I compressed it.
