Hmm, maybe this will spark interest in extraterrestrial species to finally make contact. So unlikely, but I am so hopeful.

I forget where I read this, maybe the bible, but are angels aliens, because we think they are? I just ask.

Hmm, maybe this will spark interest in OUR species to finally GET OFF OUR BUTS AND EXPLORE SPACE. So unlikely, but I am so hopeful,

Do you really think another race of life would want to make contact with us just because we've perfected purposely crashing probes into rogue rocks? :p

Can anyone in California (or western US/Latin America) see it with a telescope?

Well it shows we're trying to learn. And depending on how much we can learn from this, maybe. I know you were kidding, but still.

I would love the picture of the impact as my desktrop background...

It would be helpful if someone would post some pics. NASA is not loading anything for me right now.:(
2005-07-03, 11:45 PM #61
Not much you can look at...the images are being transfered 82 million miles away at 500-somthing kbs. That's bound to indicated low resolution until NASA edits it some more (which they said they'll do)

Yeah, I see your point. I was thinking about it earlier, and live activity in space sounds better than some random probe with outdated information.

Thing is, if there are aliens watching us, they might be cautious with our destructive nature even if it's to learn. Though, I'm sure as comet study goes along the crash and learn routine might go more into land and learn.

I'm sure they'd be well aware of our destructive nature. It's probably the sole reason, if they exist and have been visiting, why they have not confronted us yet. I forget the exact name of the theory, but it's a slow introduction over time to make first contact seem less suprising. And according to surveys, around %50 (give or take) of Americans believe aliens have visited. Whether their opinion is based on hard facts and unexplainable incidents or all the hoaxes out there is irrelevant. Clearly something has done a good job of convincing people we're not alone, be it alien intelligence or our own paranoia.

I mean, you can see nuclear detonations from space. And the huge influx in UFO visits, abductions and anything else (whether real or not) has been huge since World War II. A primative destructive race harnessing the power of the atom, almost blowing themselves up and still managing to thrive is rather interesting. Kind of shows we don't really want to be as destructive as we are. Perhaps.

Heh, I'm reminded of a bit from Stargate SG-1 when one of the Asgard is like "Your species shows great promise. You are the only race we have found which can continually almost obliterate itself while still thriving". And O'Neill's like "Thanks. I...think."

We should've just cut back on leukemia and cancer research, put the money into war, and then lose a trillion+ dollars. That would be new.

Who knows, maybe they appreciated the show. :D

Um, different funds come from different sources. It's not one big pool of money. When you spend money on space exploration you're not taking it away from cancer research.

You know, with the research they get from this comet could potentially lead to knowing what to do in the event of a planet-killer asteroid. I think that's just as important.

Of course, we all know how related blowing a hole in a comet and cancer research is.
