So I think I've finally decided to go with an Asus notebook. They seem to have a very good reputation when it comes to build quality and battery life, and that's where it really counts for me (going away to college). Now I just have to decide between a customizable z70v or the W3v.

The W3v is an Asus Ensemble notebook, which means that it's not customizable and it's expensive. However, right now the W3v has a $200 rebate on it, that, plus the 2.5% student discount I can get at www.geared2play.com and the free 3 year Asus warranty puts it in my price range.

Intel Pentium M 1.86ghz 533fsb
512mb DDR2-533 PC-4200
14" WXGA 1280x800
8x DVD+RW DF DL
60GB Hitachi 5400rpm
ATI Mobility X600 PCIe
Built in Bluetooth & WiFi
13" x 9.7" x 1.18"

Plus a free stick of 512 DDR2 memory which makes it 1 gig of dual channel.

The z70v is a heavier notebook (bad) with a larger 15.4" WSXGA+ widescreen. The screen on this notebook is supposed to be one of the best in the business, very nice. The onboard speakers (4 of them) are also supposed to be very good (by notebook standards). The z70v will, get a better battery life (not by much though), produce less heat, and is supposedly more sturdy; although of them are supposed to be rock solid contructions.

The exclusion of Bluetooth in the z70v is not important.

So which is the better buy in everyone's opinion? For people at college, is buying the smaller one well worth it? Or is the (slightly) longer battery life more important?

Uh...it's up to you? Seriously, you just gotta weigh what's important to you and then buy. If you want the big screen then get the other one (though I wouldn't reccommend that video card either way, I realize it's also a laptop so you don't have too much of a choice. To be honest, I wouldn't reccommend ATi at all unless you're getting a 9700 or 9800 mobility.).

The x600 is more powerful than the 9700, but it's not important.
