very happy to say that London got the Olympics for 2012, it'll be the first time London has had the Olympics since 1948.

I'm very glad to say that we beat the French too :p

The University myself and maeve go to is only one stop on the underground from where the stadium is going to be built, I've past through the area many times and its going to make such a difference.

Damn you England!

I mean sure they say it's the BRITISH olympics, but how come there aren't any events being held Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland?

Fyi there isn't a capital of Britain.
nope.

We beat the French like every other Nation that's tried!

;)

Anyway, Britain does get loads of medals when you consider the size of Britain compared to USA or China.

It's being held in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. you know, that country.

Also, it's London that was bidding to host the games, not the country as a whole. Complaining that there are no events being held in Scotland Wales or Northern Ireland is missing the point somewhat.

Did anyone see that little segment they did on GMTV this morning on the bid? I thought it was pretty funny.

Yeah, I was a bit dissapointed too. Anywhere else would have been so much more interesting. San Fransico would have been nice.

Football hits are also a lot heavier form of hitting then the more tackle at any cost form in rugby. If our football player's didnt have the pads that they do have the game would be a lot weaker and you would not see either guy recovering from some of the brutal hits that occur. Don't rip on it until you play it. When you go up against a black kid who can out run your *** 10 fold and has 50 pounds on you, then maybe you'll understand what pads are about.

Just that I went to a school (when i played HS football) that was a Catholic Private School that 'recruited' (meaning they gave them free tuition if they played sports) inner city Detroit kids and were just insane when it came to the game. They were alot better then us in my experience and that is why I made reference.

The only reason the hits are so brutal is because the players think "Hey, I'm wearing this thin flimsy armour so I can leap head-first at a guy without breaking my neck!".

In Rugby, it hurts, so unless you like pain, you don't charge in headfirst. Rugby is also much more of a team game, about pushing forward slowly, passing down the line.
Rugby is a gentleman's sport, there are lots of 'unspoken rules' about what you really should and shouldn't do (even though you technically can do it).

Also I think it's absurd that schools and Universities give places to students soley for the purpose of playing sport; taking places away from students that actually deserve a place, and funding away from low-income students that actually need it.

The first thing you learn is tackle with your head up and you would typically try to place the front of facemask where the ball is so that your helmet knocks it out of his hands causing a fumble. So No.

Apparently you have not analyzed american Football that closely. HS and College football are more running based in that there are more turnovers with an all passing offense. Creeping forward slowly in football is 3 4 yard gains for the First Down. Football is all about Teamwork........ I don't know how you can make that statement. If you don't work as a team for one second in Football you have 10 guys wanting to kill you, on your own team. And don't try to tell anyone that has played competive football they don't know pain. Injuries aside (i broke my collar bone) a good shot from a shoulder to shoulder collision will send a shock down your hole body causing numbness and tingley feelings.

Same, but when it comes down to it, if you can rattle their QB with a incredible sack from behind you better do it. Always help them up though. ;)

In a private school they typically (as in never) do not say no to someone with money wanting to enroll their kid there. As long as they meet whatever academic standard the school demands.

I know two americans that have come to england from american universities for a year aboard and started playing rugby, they told me on many occassions that the hits in rugby hurt more....not because they were more powerful but because they didn't have any padding...

anyways back onto topic, did anyone think that London shouldn't have won? and if so which other city would you like'd it to have gone to, New York, Moscow, Madrid, Paris??

That would probably make sense. As a freshman in high school, i played football as a lineman... I don't know how much you know about American football, but you need pads to do that. Rugby may hurt more, but that's not to say Americans never get injured playing their version of football. In fact, I really wouldn't be suprised if in professional Football leagues there are more injuries than Rugby, simply because the nature of a football tackle is so different from the nature of a rugby tackle.

They're two very different sports, and you really should pass judgement on either of them until you've played them a couple of times.

Oh, and I think New York should have won... because i live there and it would be an interesting thing to see my city bend over backwards for the olympics...

Money. Football and basketball generate millions of dollars for the schools.

I think the biggest difference is that in Rugby you never jump into a tackle. You'll break someone's neck doing that.
You always go low, and usually go down, and let two teammates go over you, and a third guy picking up the ball.
