So after I move, I might build/buy another system..

Maybe I'll wait for a $750 off $1499 coupon and get a fast cheap Dell, or maybe I'll build another system myself..not really sure yet.

Anyway..I'll probably end up with an extra computer..so unless a friend/relative and I are LAN gaming or something, it should be relatively unused. I should have broadband, so I'm thinking about leaving it in a corner and running a game server -- would anybody use it?
woot!

Not if you have half a brain you won't.

Sole reason:

Dell has a class-action lawsuit against them for ripping folks off. (Building PCs with less power than the customer bought, like 256MB RAM instead of 512MB RAM)

Copied from a post I just made 30 min ago in a different thread.

What? I don't see how that relates to his post.

If I can buy a system cheaper than I can build one, I'll buy with a CC and take the chance. Chargebacks = teh winnar. :)

You can never, ever, buy a system cheaper than you can build one, except maybe at the absolute lowest budget range ($250USD and lower)

if I wanted to buy a server..

Once in a while, decent prices come up..but note that the main point of my thread was not which computer I should buy/build..it was if I had a server, would anybody use it. :p

Oh god I just read Cadet's sig and I think I'm going to hell...

...

Anyways, I wouldn't go after Dell. The guy that made Dell (Forget his name) is like a Bill Gates Jr., except worse.

Gah..lol, I'm about to start a new thread for this question, since nobody answered it :p

Is it worth my running a server, or will it go unused? It's a P4 1.6@2.133 / 512mb, so I should be able to run a dedicated server without much trouble..

Depends on what games you are going to run.

I'm not familiar with system requirements for new games..but what couldn't I run? Dedicated server, so video shouldn't be an issue..

I think if you set up a CS:Source server a lot of massassians would play on it.

I don't see why you couldn't host a dedicated server for any game out there, really.

It doesn't take much power to run a dedicated server. The issue is your internet connection, really. What's your download/upload speed?

Please!

I had the server running on a P3 750mhz, so I don't see why it shouldn't work on your computer. :)

You'll want more RAM for a server too.
Got a permanent feather in my cap;
Got a stretch to my stride;

Dialup now, so it's not happening immediately -- but we're supposed to move in two weeks..so after I get a second system (maybe this fall), I might set it up. It looks like Earthlink offers cable with 5Mbps/384Kbps..not the greatest upload, but hopefully it'll be okay.

Sol: I might pick up a cheap 1gb stick and run 1.5gb :)
