How much can you bench?
2005-07-11, 7:22 PM #1
I haven't lifted weights much in my life..since I'm applying for a job that requires a physical fitness test, I decided that I should at least know where I'm at now, and how much further I have to go before I can pass. A guy at work happens to be a manager at a gym in my area; he told me he'd set me up with a routine for free since I'm moving this month.

I stopped by today..my requirement for the test is to bench press 96% of my body weight (I weigh 141lb). I had only benched once before in my life..a friend had 80lb set up and I lifted that..this is maybe two years ago.

So anyway..I max'd out at 135lb, and did three sets of partial reps at 155lb (4, 4, and 5 reps)..much better than I expected. He said he's positive that I'll hit 145lb next week. I'm far from being ripped or anything..but I'm happy :)

145, I'm 15.
Going into 9th grade.
I weight 120-125 pounds and I'm 5'4.

Max I remember was 120, this was when I was a freshman in highschool. I don't know what I can do now, but I think its significantly higher.

5'4"? You have it easy..not too high to lift :p

I'm 6' flat -- underweight, almost definitely due to stress..which has dropped significantly (and will drop even more shortly) but I've put on 5lb in a month or so without eating anymore and without working out...I should build up very quickly once I get into a 'new' life..

Short story: Parents getting divorced (needed to happen..less stress already, even though it's not official yet) and we're moving back 'home' (NH). :)

Yeah my Phy Ed teacher is my height or shorter and he can bench like 405.

300 is my max, no joke. Most of the time I will do 200, 10 times though.

I weigh 165, I don't max out, but I do generally bench press 185 on my last(4th) set when I do. I do the regular 8-10 reps, so I assume my max would be maybe 10-15lbs over that (no idea).

When you first start working out, chest is one of the muscle groups you notice the effect of weight lifting the fastest with. So you should be fine.

I'm at home now (as opposed to college where I would have access to more equipment), so I'm mainly just doing push ups for chest now.

I do my full sets (10-12 reps) at 170 lbs. (haven't lifted in a week or so because I've been sick though). I don't know what my max is, but I imagine it being at least 225+.

It's been 2 years since I've lifted weights so I'm not sure. I remember my bench being pretty low because I have weak wrists (one was set slightly wrong after I broke it so I have little strength for lifting it it), but for backsquat I remember my first max at the beginning of the sememster was somewhere around 250-275lbs.

I'm a weakling :( .

Shoot, squats are a whole other ball park. I use six 45 plates for my sets there.

200-235 bench press. My chest is weak. My arms are where my strength lies.

Holy cow you people are strong!

Last time I tried to bench anything was about a year ago going into the 10th grade, and I could barely do 80 lbs.! :(

Considering I'm 6'2" and 165 lbs, I think thats pretty sad.

I'm 6'2" [edit] and 210 lbs [/edit] and could barely bench the bar by itself (that is, with no weights) which was about 45 lbs I think (I could be wrong -- it was 2 years ago and my memory sucks)

I AM the weakest massassian  :(

On a side note, are (some) people able to lift more than they can bench?
May the mass times acceleration be with you.

Gah, it's been a while but about 145. Probably gone up though--I've done a LOT of construction work (read: heavy lifting) since, but I'm not sure.

Sounds about right for me. I'll be confident here and say 140, but just barely. One of my housemates is bringing some barbells up in the fall, so I'll work on upping it with them.

Good thing I've never even seen wallpaper put up. Sheetrocking your room, framing houses, bricking, moving mulch, moving dirt, moving 20 foot long 2x4's, I assume all these are heavy lifting? Because I've done plenty of that.

Is it really necessary to derail another thread?

Anyway. I haven't tried benching recently. Maybe I should find out next weekend.

I will not go into my complete gym routine...that'll take up the whole page. But to answer your question, I bench/peck press 170 lbs. at 10-12 reps, 2-3 sets. I do a 10 minute cardio before hand, and do 125 lb or so on abs (hey, abs hurt :( ). For cybrex rows, I do 160. Squats are my favorite. Agk...I think I just went into my whole routine...

Probably 200 grams. Hell, I never test these things.

I haven't had regular access to a weight room in over 2 years, so I don't know how much I can do anymore. My old max was about 200 lbs, and my body build has changed since then (I've gotten more stocky) so I could probably still do it even though I haven't lifted seriously in so long.

Tip: Do a 10 minute cardio before you do any lifting. Also, drink lots of water...I don't drink any soda at all.

I've never liked doing cardio before lifting---from my past experience it wastes valuable energy that you need for the weights, though you should still stretch and warm up. Do weights or do cardio, but just not both in the same workout. Some guys I know don't do any cardio AT ALL for any workout when they are lifting regularly.

I do agree with the water part though, although gatorade probably works better.

I know I'm capable of at least lifting the bar, but um... yeah, I'm guessing most women can compete with me in upper body strength.

I do, however, have awesome abs, which I've never had to put much work into if any. They're not Hulk Hogan abs, but they're toight :p
