My Roommates are Jerks

Today my roommates tell me that they are moving out at the end of the month. They'll move to a new house, and they said that I can "come along," but I have to sign a contract which is ridiculous. They've basically left me out to dry with about 15 days to find a place.

I guess it all started when we moved in. I'm a bit of a neat-freak, these guys are absolute pigs. I wish I was exaggerating, but I'm not. So I tell them a few times to clean up after themselves, because I'm not their mother, and I don't want to live in filth. I end up cleaning up anyway, because they refuse to do anything. They won't even wash dishes, or at least put them in the dishwasher, after they're done using them. I can understand leaving a single pot in the sink until there are some more dishes to do so you can do them all at once, but these guys won't even set a plate or cup in the dishwasher after they're done with it.

Adding to the problems comes the issue of pets. They got an old dog that likes pooping on the floor. Guess who ended up cleaning it most of the time? I also scrubbed the carpet several times with cleaner to get rid of urine. Not only in the living room, oh no, but also in my room. See, my door doesn't close all the way (borked), so the dog pushes it open and does his business in my room. I'll mention at this point that they got this dog without telling me about it first. Also, one of the guys likes to foster animals. The humane society doesn't always have room for all the animals they get, so they ask for volunteers to foster. Well, the guy gets dogs that are way too big for this small house, and keeps them in a crate all day. The foster dogs have also pooed and urinated on the carpet, and I was usually the one to clean it all up.

So, understandably, I got a bit upset and asked them several times to clean up after themselves and their dogs. Well, today they get all upset and say that my attitude is ridiculous and that they can't do anything they want because I'll complain that everything is dirty. And while I have asked them to clean up after themselves, I haven't gone to extremes. It's not like I've asked them to vaccum or scrub toilets. I do that anyway whenever I clean house.

So now I'm going to basically be kicked out in 15 days. Dumb thing too is that I can't do anything about it. The normal one month notice in the lease doesn't apply, since the roommate who was responsible for the lease never turned it in. Our landlord was incredibly forgetful too, so he never missed it. We still payed rent, but no lease. I now need to find a place to live, and move all my things there, including furniture (I don't have a truck, mind you), within 15 days.

After this excursion with stupidity, I think I'm going to try to get a studio or one bedroom apartment, roommates be damned. These guys, which used to be my friends when we all lived in the dorms, have proven to be complete jerks who can't handle someone asking them to clean up after themselves.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to use Massassi as a blog or personal ranting space, but I'm really mad right now and I need to vent to somebody who will listen. Considering how late it is, and I can't call my parents, I'm posting here.

In conclusion, roommates suck.

Look on the bright side of things. Don't feel like they're kicking you out, feel like you're kicking them out for being pigs! :D Now you can take this opportunity to find some better roommates. If you can manage it in time, you should be able to come out of this one a winner. ;)

Lacking a lease, you could probably articulatelly conduct some revenge on them before you leave...

Otherwise, I'd tell them to suck your [smelly socks], and maybe pee on their stuff before you leave?

You're better off, just work your butt off to get moved into a place of your own. The problem with roomates is that you're not in love with them - that's the only way I can get along with my g/f in the house ;)

You need roommates more suited to your "neat freak" style.

Bad roommates are the worst. My friend has had all kinds... slobs, stoners, people who stole his stuff when they moved out, the whole deal. I now know why he lives alone, and I don't blame him.

I'd say live alone if you can, but the problem is if you're in college, you're going to need additional positive cashflow besides your job so you can meet the expenses. Fortunately there is a way you can live alone on a student's income: rooming houses.

check out rooming houses, just someplace you can crash while you're looking for decent roommates and a new place to live. You get your own room w/ fixtures like a bed, lamp, table, and maybe a cheap tv if you're lucky (shared kitchen and bathroom, no separate phones-- probably just a common area with a pay phone in it, so you might rather rely on wireless) and you can live there on a student's budget--- the going rate is about $50-$75 a week on average.

I'm glad I still get along with my roommate after 2+ years living with him.

Ric, are you sure you don't mean housemates?

Cause roommates should be restricted to existing in crazy american campus accomodation and nowhere else.

Don't feel bad, I used to be room mate with to stupid imported arab back when I went to school (not my choice, i rented the room but we had to share kitchens and bathroom), and image living with someone who eats spicy food and disgusting crap all the time, doesn't know to put seran-wrap over plates of spicy spaghetti and leaving it open in the fridge, can't even run a toilet (WTVR THE HELL DO THEY **** IN OUT IN HIS WHEREVER HE CLIMBED OUT OF). The guy used to make the toilet overflow (including all th lovely spicy crap he'd eaten that day) at least once a week, running around crying that he doesn't know what to do while that overflowing poopy water flows into his room (ROFL, that was hilarious, but its a good thing it wasn't mine, he'd be dead).

After that, and a crazed frenchman who hallucinated rats and mice, I gave up and got my own 3 room apartment heeh

Roommates is the American slang.

crazyness

roommates = same room
housemates = same house
flatmates = same flat (also used to describe those who live in the same part of the building but not the same room when talking about uni accomodation)

That's what I'd normally say too, detty. Just do a common uni prank on him, cover his things in foil, fill their rooms with water bombs... whatever floats your boat. No lease = no problem.

roomates here in general means you're sharing a dwelling, it doesn't indicate what type of dwelling it is.

You should've stopped cleaning for about a week and showed them what lazy slobs they were when the see and smell piss and **** all over and can't find any clean plates to eat off. It might suck, but they'd get the idea. Unless they were incredibly stupid, in which case you'd have to actually tell them, and then they'd likely whine about it.

But now, they can live in their filth all they want. :D

Putting the dog crap on their pillos might have gotten the message across too. In reality though, they knew you would eventually breakdown and clean everything, so they didn't cae what you said.

I would just stop cleaning, period, and stay at a friend's place as much as I could.

They don't deserve to be called his friends then. :P

I was incredibly lucky with my roommate. We'd known each other in high school, have the same weird humor, habits, and interests (kind of, he's into theatre/dance [he's a technician now] and I'm into music) and we're both neat freaks.

Man almost samething happened to us, except with one of our tennants. This guy was sposed to be one of our friends but he was always a little off, not that outgoing sometimes he would dissappear and stop answering calls but was usually pretty responcible. Oneday out of the blue he asked for a ride to the airport, he never came back. Basically he moved to Florida one day without telling anyone of his friends or his 2 roommates, he left no address phonenumber and hasent called, boom just gone.

That's why you collect a security deposit and first and last months rent before they move in.

I think if "****" were to be defined in a dictionary, it'd have a pretty broad definition.

Think about it, everything you own is "your ****", you can take a ****, give someone ****, take **** from someone. Something bad/unbelievable is **** ("I can't believe this ****," or "this is ****.")

So in conclusion, they could quite literally live in their own ****.
