...Electronic paper that is!

Good e-book readers should follow. It would be so nice to just have one or two of these sheets in 8 1/2 x 11, and a small base unit that holds the books. Beats carrying around 20+ pounds of textbooks. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes.

And the PDA just became obsolete.

Fit the processor and radio transmitter/reciever inside of a special pen and write on a piece of e-paper. Sweet, until people figure out how to play video games on their physics textbooks.

Guys, you know that with large, cheaply-manufactured paper-thin displays, LCARS is only a matter of years away.
2005-07-15, 1:48 PM #13
LCARS has been possible for years, what are you talking about?

I'm rather interested in OLED technology for electroluminescant fabric. Just buy one shirt and it will never go out of style!

I thought this technology had been around for a while.
2005-07-15, 3:15 PM #17
this tech has been around for a while, many people have seen the promise of OLEDs, or Organic Light Emitting Diodes, for a while now. However, they haven't been able to get them to such a high level as Fujitsu (sorry if i got the spelling wrong) has, especially with the memory function, which brings down power level to an extreamly low and cost-effective range.

Okay, now it's economically feasible.

Buying 300,000 LCD touchscreens is a little expensive.

LCARS?

You have to be a nerd to understand.

It's a highly evolved operating system. Similar in concept to the POSIX specification, LCARS itself in the Star Trek universe isn't so much a single implementation as an amalgamation of user interface, hardware, communications and linguistics standards. LCARS functions similar to a large, distributed cluster. Much of the processing is done by one (or more) central computers, with individual terminals running something akin to an X Server which rearranges controls and the UI at run-time to fit the dimensions of the panel. It's theoretically possible to run a ship's engineering section from a doorbell's console, although you probably wouldn't want to do that.

Because it's touchscreen-based, input feedback is provided through audio (similar to modern PDAs).

The controls on the panel can change at any time, but generally speaking you'd want to use the panel or station for its intended purpose. Something like a PADD would change completely depending on the kind of task you were performing.

Why is the answer to why always why? Why is there no final answer to why? Simply why not? Holy cow, this is pretty deep, meaningful **** I wrote. Glad I wrote it down. Oh man."
