How do you pronounce "GIF"?

GIF as in "graphics interchange format". I know that the original pronunciation was with a soft "g", but I always use a hard "g". A friend of mine objects to this; she says it with a soft "g". So I'm trying to find out which usage is more popular.

I say gif life gift. without the T. Some people say jif though.. and it always takes me a few seconds to realise what they mean :p

I'm with GBK, I tend to say each individual letter. I hate when people say "seequel" instead of "SQL" - it drives me crazy!

However in my head I think of it as Jif as in the peanut butter.

I pronounce it "jif."

I don't know if that's right, nor do I know if anybody really gives a crap about the proper way to pronounce file types.

Depends on the situation, I usually think a hard g like gift to myself, but if I'm speaking it aloud I pronounce all the letters. like GBK and Brian said.

Technically speaking it should be "Gif" as in "Gift", but also technically speaking, it's G-I-F.

I used to pronounce it with a Hard "G" sound (like gift) in my head, and would usually actually say GIF, because I usually say each letter in an acronym as you would if you were saying the alphabet normally.

However, after finding this page http://www.olsenhome.com/gif/ I think I am going to start pronouncing it "JIF" when I don't sound out each individual letter.
