...one of these guys.

I was about 2 feet from stepping on this guy while I was taking my dog out to the bathroom. If he hadn't been hissing and rattling that tail, I might have a brand new snake bite.

I stepped back and ran back inside to grab my camera, which took about 5 seconds, and by the time I was back, he was climbing up into a tree. Those guys are FAST.

I almost stepped on a rattler back when I was a kid. It was enjoying the warm rocks on a river bank. Walked by, heard a rattle and a hiss, looked down, saw the snake coiled about a foot from my foot. I think I jumped about ten feet. The was the most scared I have ever ben in my life.

Isn't the percentage of people who die after being bitten by a rattlesnake (in the U.S.A) extremely low?

Only 40 species of snakes are venomis. So don't worry too much. :)

(Still awaiting confirmation if this is true, as I havn't begun studying toxicology yet)

Typically, you have 3-4 hours to get medical attention before there's any permanent damage. An adult will be less affected than a child due to body weight. Also, the venom is designed to paralyze small rodents. That's why it takes so long to really do damage to a human. Baby rattlesnakes are the most dangerous because they can't control the amount of venom they release when they bite.
