Violent videogames reduce violence

Or at least that's the conclusion I'm inclined to draw.

It's certainly more informative than anything I've seen come from the mainstream media, which makes it sound like the youth have a violence problem. Interesting.

Suprisingly identical to a report I wrote about Media's outlook on violent videogames for my phsych paper. The only thing missing was that nifty graph, because I couldn ever find it.

*sigh*... my best friend is on the media's side, and believes that all M and T rated video games are spawn of the devil... it can get really annoying with how stubbornly he sticks to his idea, no matter how many articles like these I show him...

Unfortunately, very few people who aren't gamers will see that article, and even fewer of those (if any) will take it seriously.

i've been telling people all along... the kids are too busy trying to complete that "one more level/mission/etc..." to commit violent acts

Games don't make someone violent. I don't shoot a cop in vice city or SA and say "Wow, I think that would be cool to do" and go out and do it.

If a child is playing the game, yes they are more impressionable.. But

A. Even a child knows murder is wrong

B. Don't blame the game, blame the parents that let the kid have the game.
2005-07-25, 11:33 PM #14
Reminds me of Eddie Izzard. "And you know these kids get the weapons from their grandfather's arsenal."
2005-07-26, 12:51 AM #15
The argument is not that video games make kids think "Hey I kill people in Vice City, why not try it in real life?"...It's more that violence in video games can desensitize children to violence in general so that they see it as a normal thing in life. Not that I completely agree with that but I think the theory holds some water.
2005-07-26, 1:16 AM #16
They used the same argument for violence in movies, although the person playing a game is more in control of the violence.

I've always played violent games, and if a game has violence it is more likely to hold my attention for longer. I also love violent movies.

Funnily enough, I despise violence in real life.

I've always been against physical altercations in every way shape and form, yet I am the greatest paintball sniper, and DOD sniper I've ever met. Does that mean I'd buy a gun and shoot someone of power I didn't like?

There are a lot of gamers out there, the media can't touch us.

It does piss me off that retarded laws pass like that, though. Such as California's banning of Wi-Fi "cantennas." Watch out for those scary hackers, it's not just completely your fault for not setting the encryption settings that are available out of the box!

Yeah, they do desensitize children to violence, but it's a good thing. They still know violence is wrong, but look at all the violence in the world today. I'm sure if a child turned on tv all they'd see on most news stations is something about murder, killing, rape, or war. That's all the world consists of nowadays, fighting.

Besides, if a video game desensitizes a child to violence, so does watching TV and seeing the reality of the war-filled world as well.

 I hate when people say things like this as if humanity is going down the toilet. The world nowadays doesn't consist only of fighting, not at all. Violence has been a huge part of society since the dawn of time, and it's definitly not getting worse, it's getting alot better.
2005-07-26, 11:56 AM #26
I've researched this subject on two separate occassions, and have drawn the same conclusion both times: if a person is already inclined to commit violence, this will increase the likelihood of him/her committing it - but there is no evidence to support the hypothesis that there exists a direct link between violent media and violence in life.

Yeah fighting is a part of humanity it's been that way forever, I mean even nomads civilizations had wars.
2005-07-26, 1:03 PM #29
The nomad civilizations were also the most violent. It looks like Ghengis Khan has been playing too much GTA  . OMG JACK THOMSON TO THE TIME MACHINE! WE NEED TO STOP HIM AND HIS CHILDREN!

Maybe if Genghis Kahn had played GTA, he would have been able to release his violence and anger there. ;)

Anti-gamer: Games cause violence.
Rational Person: No they don't.
Anti-gamer: Yes they do.
Rational Person: How do you know?
Anti-gamer: Because it's violence.
Rational Person: Um....what?
Anti-gamer: Games cause violence and need to be banned. Get over it.
Rational Person: Then how do you explain the Judiest Priest case where it said unless someone already has the proclivity to do something like suicide, they won't do it? Wouldn't the case be the same with video games?
Anti-gamer: Remember Columbine! Ban games!
Rational Person: So the fact that in the past there has been false outcries against both music and movies, saying they cause violence, means nothing to you? That maybe games are just the next scapegoat?
Anti-gamer: Death to video games! They are corrupting our youth!
Rational Person: What about the fact that our crime rate has actually gone down and this is the most crime-free era we've ever experienced?
Anti-gamer: Video games incite violence! Lalalalalalala!
Rational Person: What about all the violence on TV? Why aren't you going after them?
Anti-gamer: Ban video games!! Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalala!
Rational Person: Alright....I'm going to make this very clear for you. There is no link between real world violence and playing video games. It has been proven. Are you able to grasp that concept?
Anti-gamer: People who play video games and disagree with me are satanic idiots with no life that sacrifice babies to the devil!! Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalala!!!
Rational Person: That's it moron. You're going down! *whips out shotgun and blows Anti-gamer away*
Media: See!? Video games DO cause violence!!
Rational Person: Wha.....I....Arrrrghh!! *breaks down and begins crying in frustration*

Video games don't cause violence. Morons do.
