Whatever happened to Macromedia Shockwave?
2004-05-18, 7:49 PM #1
I've been wondering about this a lot for the past few years. Back in 1997, the technology was fairly common on the web, but today, its practically dropped off of the face of the earth and you never see it used (exceopt for the occasional game).

Did flash slowly replace it or something? I've been in the web design scene for a hell of a long time (since the beginning of the web as we know it today back in 1996) and I never heard what happened to the technology on the web. Flash is great, but Shockwave has the capability to be compuiled into a .exe file, meaning you can have stand-alone flash-like content. Flash still can't do that as far as I know.

I know that you can still write shockwave stuff for offline media (Cd-rom/DVD interfaces, kiosk displays, etc.) with Macromedia Director (a program that I'm starting to get into, thanks to an older version I dug up someplace) but I'm curious as to why it isn't on the web anymore.

Any answers?

I'm pretty sure flash has a "export as executable" option type thing.

I still see some shockwave stuff around, it's just that flash is now used a lot more in web design whereas shockwave hasn't really increased its market.

Yes it can. You can use a projector to publish standalone applications as executable programs. I believe this is what you're talking about?

No, they are different. Shockwave seems to be used more so with with games. Flash can do games just as well but it seems that shockwave is more powerful for making games.

Page, like it has been said already, flash CAN export into a .exe. Just make sure you edit the publish settings or open the .swf in the flash player and save it to a .exe format.

I mean, I took a class on flash at uni last semester and I never learned about a feature that allowed you to save a flash project as a .exe program that could run without flash player.

I have Flash MX open right now and i'm looking at the export menu. Supported export formats are:

swf, avi, mov, gif, wav, emf, wmf, eps, ai, dxf, bmp, gif (again), jpg, png.

[edit]

OK, I found the .exe exporter under the Publish settings menu. I see what you mean.

I never was taught aboutthis feature, so I hadn't heard about it until now. I assume it lets you run your flash file without flash player or any other dependencies.

Yes you can compile flash into an exe. It makes a big a** file though. But yea i think flash took over shockwave.
