I've been wondering about this a lot for the past few years. Back in 1997, the technology was fairly common on the web, but today, its practically dropped off of the face of the earth and you never see it used (exceopt for the occasional game).
Did flash slowly replace it or something? I've been in the web design scene for a hell of a long time (since the beginning of the web as we know it today back in 1996) and I never heard what happened to the technology on the web. Flash is great, but Shockwave has the capability to be compuiled into a .exe file, meaning you can have stand-alone flash-like content. Flash still can't do that as far as I know.
I know that you can still write shockwave stuff for offline media (Cd-rom/DVD interfaces, kiosk displays, etc.) with Macromedia Director (a program that I'm starting to get into, thanks to an older version I dug up someplace) but I'm curious as to why it isn't on the web anymore.
Any answers?

Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, "You're next." They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.
