Ok, so here's the deal. I walk into the toilets at work today, and having concluded my enterprises there, I (as always) go to wash my hands. I then move toward the metal box hanging on the wall which 'hygenically' dries my hands. All good so far.
Now comes the problem.
This automatic hand dryer claims to be 'environmentally friendly' because it saves 'countless trees'.
LIES LIES LIES
Every time you wave your hands under it, a highish current passes through the thin wires of the heating element to create heat, and then a fan blows the warmed air onto your hands. So you don't use paper towels, but you know what - the electrical energy warming your hands is likely coming from coal or another non-renewable source! The paper towels though 'using trees' are sustainable! You can plant more trees! Really - they even do it by themselves in the wild!
So when an electric hand dryer tells you smugly that it is superior to simple paper towels, just remember where the warm air is coming from: dead plant life from x million years ago that is running out.
So there.
(It's funny where your mind wanders when you're washing your hands)
