Hack this Site (A GAME)

A while ago I heard of a site that was a fun game that involved hacking. The site (click here) has a series of levels that test your skills from basic computing to a degree of hacking expertise. Try it out!

It's a great site, I've passed althe the basic and some of the realistic. It's been posted here before, pretty cool stuff. Just watch out, the site founder is currently under federal investigation.

I... Can't get passed level 1! Why isn't the password admin/ADMIN/Admin? It's always admin! I tried admin, password, entering nothing, level2, level1, Hack this Site, HTS, entering each individual word from the hint, go, go please, go damn you, nothing works! What all important, obvious, right in front of me word am I missing?!

I'm also a little stumped on Level 3.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I think level 3 is messed up on this page, since its the older version of the site. I'd try level 3 from the link at the top.

Edit: Just tried level 3 on the main site, and it works, use the main page instead.

On the first level? I wouldn't expect that until at least the 3rd level... I'm in way over my head. I don't know anything about this stuff.

Viewing the source isn't that advanced, it's just basic HTML. :p Level 4 is HTML-based too, Ubuu.

Um yes it is HTML based, but once you look at the HTML, if you dont know how php works you dont know what to do with it.....unless you are doing some completely different level 4...

Anyways, level 5 is being a btich.

Then how did I, knowing nothing of PHP, get past level 4? It's HTML-based, making your own form. But yeah, level 5 is being a *****.

Well then maybe its an HTML thing, but I learned what was supposed to be done through my experience with PHP.

Ok, I finallly manage to get past three. Now I'm like the rest of you, stumped on five. I would surmise that the PHP script verifies the e-mail address.

level 4 and 5 are easy. you just use the web developer toolbar in firefox to change the email address in the form and then press submit. exactly the same method for both levels.

Cheater. :p I remember doing it by hand years ago, when all I had was IE! :(

Level 5 involves Javascript injection.

the "correct" way to do level 5 is to fake an http request to the server so that instead of using your own computer as the referer, you're using the original website. the php script is basically checking where the request is coming from.

you can do it in a telnet client or using the web developer toolbar to modify the form in the browser itself.

took about 30 seconds...

see what the effect on one letter is, see that the first character translates to itself, see that the second translates to itself plus one, and so on. realise what the word is going to be by the 4th letter.

Well I guess testing the encryption ever time I decrypted one of the characters slowed me down, despite them all being right while testing.

Future posting. It's been a problem of late and greatly annoying. It seems your time of post jumps an hour.
