Yeah these seem to come up all the time, but number 3 is freaking amazing:

They are the same colour, edit the pic yourself if you dont believe it.

That painting was a gift, Todd. I'm taking it with me.

I like illusion 1 better for some reason.

Amazing. I was fooled by all three, and I agree, the third one is quite incredible. Give me a sec and I might find an unusual and simple illusion I remember.

That was pretty good. The third one especially. If you use the mask and stare at the two pieces, then the quickly remove the mask, the one on the right will still look grey for a few seconds, but then slowly change to a yellow appearance. Pretty cool stuff.

Here's the one I was talking about. Not flashy or cool or anything, but I'm curious to see how people do:

Count the F's and see how many you can find. I saw all of them on the first go, which apparently means I'm a genious.

This one is really funky too.

Stare at the cross in the middle for a few seconds and try not to blink.

My eyes suck.
Even when I use the mask the colors in the last one look different to me. :gbk:

That last ones really freaky Spork. I can't even begin to imagine how that works.

I can. The purple cross in the middle of the first one and the yellow foreground equal out to some gray-ish color. The yellow cross on the second one combined iwth the blue foreground equal out to the same color. They look different without the mask because the surrounding objects are used as a reference for the color and make it look different. :p

I don't get it. How am I supposed to distinguish between the image itself and what my eyes are putting there?

The blank spot turns green.

We covered all these in my color theory class (except the animated gif...). After doing it both manually with guache and with photoshop, it's amazingly easier to do it with the latter. They're good exercises though, especially the ones with color to learn how everything works in relation to everything else.

Whenever I go to a gallery at night and they have a yellow light shining directly at the center of a work, I want to beat some gallery director ***. It totally obliterates all the subtle hue/temperature/value/etc. relationships the artist worked so hard to create. Museums are (usually) better about this.

Why is the answer to why always why? Why is there no final answer to why? Simply why not? Holy cow, this is pretty deep, meaningful **** I wrote. Glad I wrote it down. Oh man."

I was talking about the one with the cirlces and the x in the center. ;)

Oh, I can hazard a guess as to how it works, but its just kinda freaky.

I dont think thats it...the purple spots are supposed to disappear. Thats one of the best illusions i've seen.

Amazing stuff, though I have to agree with Anovis as opposed to the opion of the original site.

The animation Spork posted is especially fascinating.

The pink spot turns gray but the afterimage is green (afterimage is roughly the compliment of the actual image, red turns green, orange turns blue, black turns white, etc.).

My favorite afterimage illusion is the one where you see Jesus on the wall, but this one is cool too once all the pinks vanish.

The green thing goes Pac-Man and eats the other circles.

Pretty damn cool! Is there a scientific explanation for these illusions?

This one is nowhere near as cool but still kinda funky.

Close your left eye and stare at the cross with only your right eye open. The spot will disappear and reappear from your peripheral vision as it crosses your blind spot where your retina attaches to your optic nerve.

If it doesnt work for you change your distance from your monitor.

Ah, I just love these illusions.

Though my eyes suck and start to hurt when I keep the other one closed for too long. Geez.

It's not an optical illusion, it just looks like one.

I've seen various versions of that snake illusion. I like telling people it's an animated JPEG.
