Which if any Java IDE's do you use? I am just starting Java and wanted to get a feel of what most people feel comfortable with. Thanks!

vi.

I've heard some good things about Eclipse and Netbeans. I hate BlueJ.

My last CS class required me to use Eclipse, which is a free Java based IDE, overall it's pretty slick, but like all java apps it a bit cumbersome.

I do all my coding in Crimson Editor, regardless of language.

We used Putty, which was a client, to access the campus' servers. I've recently tried and liked Eclipse, though I preferred the niceties of J++ before it was removed from shelves due to a lawsuit between Sun and MS.

Putty isn't an IDE though, just a telnet/ssh client. What did you end up using in the terminal? vi? emacs? nedit? pico? ee?

"We used Putty, which was a client..." ;)

We used Pico, which was like a friggin' downgraded notepad.

Pico is nice, but I prefer nano.

Pico isnt neccessarily a "downgraded notepad", its more of a 'downgraded Emacs'.

And besides, be glad you were using PuTTY and not Windows' built-in telnet client...

Pico is ok, it just isn't very powerful.

No question. Eclipse rocks. It may be cumbersome for small applications and assignments, but all IDEs tend to be that way. I like SciTE for general purpose text and code editing, but when I have a real Java project to do, nothing beats Eclipse.

I've used codewarrior (absolutely horrid) and blujay (for class), along with crimson when I just compile with the java compiler.
