I like Windows
2004-05-17, 6:13 PM #1
No, this isn't a joke, and yes, I've dealt with Mac and Linux systems, and I have to say, I LIKE WINDOWS.

No, I don't love it (not nearly close) but I do like it overall.

What a lot of people keep saying to me is, "Are you stupid? Windows suxz!!!11!!OMGBBQ" and I reply to them, in kind, with "OMGBBQ UR MOMZ ON PHIRE!!!!1!!! ZERG RUSH!"

They usually leave by then, and I can play with my friend, Mr. Windows.

He has fantastic programs for me to run, like Notepad! It's a creativity program that gives me extreme flexibilty to write whatever I want...weeee!

And how about Paint? It's a top of the line graphics editing software that gives me the box tool AND the filled IN box tool! Beat THAT, Photoshop!

Also, it does the neatest thing ever! It destroys itself whenever I press a wrong combination of buttons! Then all I have to do is find the install disks and reinstall the entire operating system and lose some to all of my data in the process! But, hey, that's Mr. Windows for ya! ALLLLLLWAYS a character!

Haha, yes, my friends you don't know what you're missing if you're missing Windows. Cause no one ever misses Windows.

Excuse me, while I slit my wrists. Windows just crashed again.

I know this is a joke thread, but seriously, windows is so under-prepped.

Linux gives you a choice of two office suites (in KDE at least) instead of a simple ascii editor like notepad (KDE also gives you about 5 of those too, if my memory serves me correctly), and for images, you get Gimp instead of a simple prograsm like paint.

The only downside is that getting my printer to work in KDE is a real b**** (it took me an hour and a half to figure out how to do it, but i got it in the end), but other than that, KDE gives you all your software pre-loaded and ready to run.

In terms of utilities and immediate out of the box functionality, KDE has windows beat hands-down.

It's a joke, yes, but I was trying to incite stories about bad windows installation stories...in a slightly humorous way.

Maybe you just didn't know what you were doing.

I don't mean that as an insult or anything. I just meant hat, for instance, I can't do much of anything in Linux because for the most part I don't know what I'm doing. It's not linux's fault, it's mine...

Windows isn't all that bad - I've got Open Office for all my uni needs, Abiword (because I think it's pretty!!), Gimp (for when i decide to learn it), firefox and opera...

...it took me a while to realise you can get away with keeping the fluffiness and familiarity of windows and still have most of the groovy stuff the penguin people have. I admit I had a brief dalliance with linux, but not long enough to really play, but I was impressed. I still use XP Pro, but it does me grand thanks very much.

Installs fine, picks up all my bits and bats I plug into it, doesn't hang or crash - I leave it running for a few days at a time.

Meh, whatever floats your boat I suppose.

^^ That post just about goes for me, too.
I had linux, and enjoyed it greatly. Unforunatly, my schedule doesn't allow me hours and hours to learn the ins and outs of an entirely new OS.

That sucks, too, cuz linux is way prettier than windows in every kind of way [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

I must admit, when i am in windows i incessently try to enter nix commands in a dos prompt, and am continually trying to use . and / to locate text in notepad or similar things, though that is as much Opera's fault as anything for getting me used to that.

If I never have to use OpenOffice again for the rest of my life, i'll die happy.

The only real problems i've noticed is that Windows tends to get a bit unstable after it's been installed for about a year. I still haven't reinstalled though, too lazy for that.

I have no complaints whatsoever with Windows XP Pro, other than it not running particularly well on machines with less than 128 MB RAM. But I guess I probably shouldn't be trying to do that anyway.

My only real pet-peeve with XP is that you can't delete shortcuts without that annoying message making sure you understand that you're not deleting the program - fair enough if it comes up the once, you check a box saying "yes I understand, now don't tell me again", but EVERY SINGLE TIME!!

Well Windows 9x series is a joke.

I've had only 1 bad installation of Windows 2000 Professional.

XP only crashed due to a failing harddrive.

Right now I'm installing Gentoo on my laptop (Dell Pentium III 866 MHZ).

I'm doing a stage 1 install (Compile everything from scratch). I got it installed, so I told it to install xfree, kde, gnome, alsa-utils, and x-screensaver, it has to compile 189 packages. Started about 11 pm last night and I'll be surprised if it gets done by tomorrow morning. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

I always find it humorous that other people have problems with Windows, especially XP, which has always done what I need it to do, flawlessly, and I do alot. Maybe I'm just lucky? I've had the same XP installation since January of 2003, with only minor problems, and my system continues to run smoothly. I have Linux on my secondary hard drive, and it's fun to mess around in, but it's nowhere near ready to replace my Windows as my primary OS. Maybe that will change one day though.

No. Not at all. It's the fact that the driver support for HP after you lose your disk--SUCKS. I'm a very computer literate person, but it took me a half hour to download the right driver, another hour to get my dad's laptop to boot correctly, then it worked fine. After that I realize Windows has more than its share of problems sometimes--on any prefab PC especially. I'm not about to replace it anytime soon though--Linux compatibility with everything sucks. Don't try and BS me linux people--can I play FarCry on linux? How about Painkiller? And what about Half-Life 2 (though I have heard rumors of a port)? Truth is, only games that are at LEAST a few months old work on WINE(x) and even then usually quite shoddily. But hey, whatever dances your chili.

I'm currently running a dual boot Win98Se and Suse 9.0 which is working quite well for me. I use my windows partition for games and DVDs and my linux partition for everything else.

Currently my Win98Se install is a stable as a rock and I really dont need the linux install at the moment, but I wont ever upgrade to XP so I figured I needed to learn a new OS. Basically I wont upgrade windows on principle, I think the whole activation scheme is ridiculous, I don't want to cough up for a overpriced windows disc and the whole palladium thing just grates my cheese.

But thats just me, frankly both OSes have pros and cons so you just pick whatever one fills your needs best.

I'm well aware that palladium isn't in XP, that was a general point about how it turned me off MS products in general, my fault for not making that clearer. And yes there are ways around the activation but AFAIK none of them are legal. I choose not to do illegal things because you know, they're illegal. I'll inform MS of my displeasure about their current and forthcoming products by not buying any more of their stuff. It doesn't mean that I think windows is bad or linux is good, but if you don't like what a company is doing you stop purchasing their stuff.

I used to really like painting the games workshop minis too, but I got the cranks after GW raised the prices for the 2nd time in 6 months. I still like all their stuff, but can't jutify buying it at the prices they sell.
