A little programmy help?

Heya, I was wondering if anyone here knows of a program that can tell me what programs are using a file on my HD. The problem I have is that I'm trying to shift a video file into a new home (reorganising), and for some reason Windows says that the file cannot be moved: it's being used by a program or another user. I then think, right, I'll Ctrl-Alt-Del, and kill any program like media player or whatever is running in the background. Nothing. Just my usuals, mouse stuff, you know the sort: nothing that would use an avi file.

If I could find out which program it is, I could then pick it out in taskman, kill it, shift the file and be happy!

Any help would be much appreciated,

Cheers,

Martyn [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I'd post in technology if anyone looked there!!

In other news, problem solved - I just opened it in DivX player, stopped it, closed it, then it let me move it - go figure [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

So, overlords of the forum, if you can't be arsed to move this, just lock it, unless anyone else is bothered about such a tool?

Ctrl+alt+delete tells you all the programs running, and in that case it probably would have shown the divx player running even though you couldnt see it. I've had the same thing happen with Windows Media Player a few times.

I'd be quite interested in such a program, actually.

This thread is fine in the dicussion forum. Threads concerning program recomendations or comparing multiple programs/software/hardware are fine here. The technology forum is more for specific help with one thing.

SysInternals Handle. The syntax is "handle.exe nameoffile.ext." And it will list all process with a handle to that file, it also does partial name matching.

Yes, please, use the tech forum. For sure, there are several of us that check there regularly.

If the movie is in a folder, it won't move because windows is trying to make a thumbnail. One of the more annoying problems with XP that I have to deal with. Just wait for the thumbnail to appear one the left pane (you may have to expand the details panel), and then move it.

Also if you do find a program to tell you what is using the file, it will just tell you explorer.exe. And we all know what happens if you end process that... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/redface.gif]

If no one figured it out yet, I would've said to copy the file to your new directory, open DOS (or the DOS Promt), go to the directory you copied from, and type "del [filename].[ext]".

But, I guess you don't need to now. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

That wouldn't've made any difference if another program was using the file.

In some cases you can at least copy the file, rather than cutting it.
