I saw this on DVD a few days ago and I though it was fantastic.

The ending I thought was amazing, and it actually had me in tears.

Overall an amazing film.

Thoughts?

Yes, I thought it was enjoyable. He doesn't do it often, but Tom Cruise sometimes pulls off a good performance.

Yes, a good movie indeed. Tom Cruise was good also in Minority Report.

Very excellent movie. I love the detail they took on the sword fighting.

My only pick was how everyone seemed to be immortal. "Oh, I just got shot 3 times in the chest or arms or legs, but I still have the energy to remove my sword and kill some guys."

Adrenaline and biological pain killers.

Gladiator and The Last Samurai are my two favorite movies.

I assume you're referring to the fact that Ujio is shot 3 times and still manages to stand up and walk on his own. If you pay attention he doesn't do any more fighting from that point on, he only rides his horse for a minute and then is... uh... dismounted. As for some of the others.. yeah a .50 cal musket shot in your leg isn't going to just be shaken off like they do... Tom Cruise comes to mind in this area... he gets on in the leg and just shrugs it off and keeps on truckin.

Another good one with Tom Cruise is Vanilla Sky.

I just threw out 3 times as a random number. Its just that some of the characters get shot and don't fall. Sorry, but getting shot is not something you can easily shrug off. People get shot in the arm and die from shock cause they can't seek help. Though in the heat of battle, you can get shot in the leg and not realize it.

Yeah I agree with you Thrawn, especially with weapons they used back then. But it is possible to be THAT tough, or to just have enough adrenaline to not notice.

back then guns(and bullets) didn't kill nearly as well as they maimed. That is why there was such a high occurance of amputations during the Civil War.

But, because musket balls didn't tend to exit they caused much bigger trauma. They released all their kinetic energy into whoever they hit, shattering bones and rupturing weaker organs. Not very accurate, not a very long range, but a good amount of stopping power when they did hit. Enough to make even the heaviest armoured knights obselete in any case.

As with any "historical" drama (emphasis on drama) I'm sure that there are plenty of innaccuracies and "liberties" to poke holes in (Samurai don't draw their sword fully out of their scabbard to inspect it, doing so meant that you were going to use it on someone. Just slide it out a tad, never removing it.).

Perfectly alright popcorn fluff.

-:
Takes itself too seriously, predictable, nothing inventive.

+:
On the other hand, it wears it's production values well, technically it's fine, has a nice foggy battle, has a hyooge (predictable, not really Thermopylae-esque) gory end battle, and in addition, Samurai and Ninja stuff in A-list movies (as opposed to B-grade crap) is always neat.

File next to and a little under Gladiator and Braveheart.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

I like it, although I'm not that big on the "who knows what happened to Nathan" ending.

I had a slight problem with Cruise pulling up to second in command. I understand he's combat veteran with knowledge of the enemy and their new training, and I know that he trained hard, but still, I wouldn't have him so high up in my army...

I liked it a lot. My girlfriend cried a LOT. It was the first movie she ever cried at....

I wanna watch it again!

/grabs his sword and goes the rental store.
