New PC games demand more power. But we already knew this...

Another CNN story where they finally learn PC games actually take processing power.

But this article discusses games like Everquest II, Half-Life II and Doom 3, and other such games, where the PC processing power and video power must be up to par in order to get the best eye candy, and smoothest play, to name a few...

I also read in a recent Maximum PC magazine that when Diablo first came out, PC's then could just barely run it. When Doom 3 comes out, PC's will barely run it. But 2 years from now, we'll be laughing at the power required to run Doom 3...amazing isn't it?

It's humourous because it suggests Dell make top-of-the-range PCs capable of running such games.

Actually, Doom3 will apparently run pretty well on a geforce3. Or so I've heard. Don't base anything on that horrible alpha that got leaked. We're talking about *John Carmack* here, and even if I hate his engines from an editing point of view, they *are* fast.

Also, these guys are absolute morons if they're spending a couple grand a year to keep up. I have a pretty much top of the line PC, and I only spend $200-400 a year.

I read that article earlier today and I felt it took quite a "Captain Obvious" point of view.

And the "professional gamer" who had to have thousands in equipment every year made me laugh. I could easily spend less than a thousand a year and easily be able to handle anything that comes out that year.

I d/led a demo of Halo a week or two ago, installed it, and it ran relativley decently, until there were 5 enemies on the screen -- then it got all choppy until they were dead. This was all on a brand new Dell, one month old.
OMF:Battlegrounds works on it too, and very smoothly. Yay! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Halo is just a really bad port so don't use that game as a means of testing how powerful your computer is. After spending about 500 dollars for my computer's recent upgrade, I can run Unreal Tournament 2004 with a resolution of 800x600 with an FPS of about 60-70 with ease. You don't need to spend thousands of dollars to upgrade. IT just goes to show that you can't trust ignorant boobs from places like CNN for news like this. I'm pretty sure that Doom 3 will be no more tasking on your computer if you can run FarCry or UT2004 with no problem.

I spent less than 400 bucks on my computer, and can run it 1152x864 80 FPS. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Oh and Spork, a good overclock will beat any Athlon 64 unfortunately...for you. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Speed isn't as much a issue anymore as the subject of detail is.

Sure two people can run a game at the same resolution and get good frame rates, but one of them will be able to see the pixel shaders.

Yeah... Halo has horrible performance compared to the x-box version which has inferior hardware. Might have something to do with the resolution though... what resolution does the x-box use?
