Speeding up Blender rendering
2004-05-22, 10:01 AM #1
Is there a way to speed up Blender's rendering engine (or my whole pc, for that matter)? I made a short clip that will take an estimated 14 hours to render and is only going to be 9-10 seconds long. Right... I find that just a tad rediculous.
On average, it renders about 3:30 per frame (or 12 seconds per image, 16 images per frame).

Is there anything I can do?

I cant remember where the settings are, but you can adjust the quality in the same place you can adjust the frames per second.

You can adjust quality or you can try this also...

Supposedly an optimized version of blender, why, I don't know.

Well, that brought my rendering time down to about 2:30 per frame, which I think is around 8 seconds per image (at 640x480). So that's about a total of 10 hours rendering time. That's a little better.

What I really need are new ram cards. 128MB is just... bad.

That's... that's bad. really bad. i don't know what it is normalyl, but thats just bad. Oh, and since we're on the topic of animation, has anyone else noticed that dreamwork's Animation studio has almsot reached Pixar, 'graphics'-wise? i jsut watched shrek yesterday, adn that and the 'Shark's Tale' preview were damn impressive.

Nah.
Nemo > Sharktale
Nemo looked alot better.

But I will agree with Shrek 2 > Pixar

Some of the stuff you swore was realistic.

You run Blender on a 500 MHz machine with only 128MB ram and see how well it does. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]
I spend so much time waiting, it's ridiculous. This is one of the reasons I keep giving up on 3D animation. In fact, it's one of the main reasons I gave up JK editing. When you can't run a game like JK smoothly, it's time to upgrade. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/redface.gif]

Heck, my pc can't even keep up with my typing sometimes. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/redface.gif]

1) Faster proccessor
2) More memory
3) Faster bus
4) Faster IDE
5) Faster hard driver
6) Faster memory

7) Just get a new computer

Well, if your computer can't keep up typing, it sounds like something is sucking up that CPU power, like spyware. The last time I had a problem with typing lagging behind was on a Pentium 133 with Windows 95...

I love it that people think they need to throw down thousands to get good PC's. It only takes 3-5 hundred people, yeesh.

Yeah... $300-$500 that I don't have.

I'm trying to get some ram cards on ebay, but everytime I put something on my watch list, some n00bs bid on it and jack up the price to about 4 or 5 times as much as they'd have to pay if they had any clue how to bid. -ALWAYS

That bit of ram is not going to make any difference, so don't bother. For the speed of your system, 128MB is very good. Back in those days, the regular amount was 64MB.

I think its about time you save up some money, because that system is going nowhere, that is, except the recycle bin.

I monitored my RAM with a program, and it's almost always around 19MB. A bit on the low side. 3D programs demand RAM. Jed took almost half of my system resources, so as you may imagine, Blender's not doing too well.

But yes. I need a better system.
