Optical Mouse help

I don't think this really needs to go into the Tech forum, it's probably a simple problem and I'm just too tired to find the solution.

I have a Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse 2.0. I like it very much. Never had any problems with it, until this evening. I came back after dinner and brought the computer back up from Standby. First off, this computer doesn't really like Standby all that much. I've found that quite a few programs and items in the system become unstable or just don't work correctly after comming out of Standby. So I bring it back up, about 5 minutes later, I start having problems with the mouse. Things like it lagging up, or sticking on screen even though I'm moving it, jerking behavior as I move it across the screen (The lag I mentioned would be more like warping). I'll go to click on some things and it doesn't work. I had to click several times on some items (4+ times), like folders, for them to open. The scroll wheel would just stop responding. I'd scroll and nothing would happen.

I figure it's a result of comming out of Standby, so I reboot. All is fine for aobut 45 minutes, then it begins again. Note that this was a reboot, not a shut down and power back on, I'm trying that next. So, this time I figure maybe I'm picking up some interference from something, so I change the channel my mouse is using to talk to the computer. Three times I did this, no luck.

So what is going on here? My final two guesses are either A) A shut down and power back on should fix it, or B) a piece of dirt or something is playing hell with the optics. It'd be convienent to be able to use it again, I have an older PS2 mouse plugged in now, it feels quite alien. I keep reaching for a non-existant scroll wheel on it. Amazing how attached you become to things like that... So... Help?

if the stuff you mentioned isn't causing it perhaps reinstalling the drivers

Symptoms sound similar to when I had some loose wiring in my Intellimouse Explorer. The wire coming out of the front was kinda loose and caused warping and such.

With a wireless, I'd say there's a good chance it's a problem with the transmitter or receiver. Also maybe some kind of wiring problem inside the mouse maybe.

If its wireless, doesn't that mean it takes batteries? Sounds like a perfect example of a dying battery to me.

Yep, sounds like a wirelessness problem. I would never buy a wireless mouse. One of my clanmates used one for a while, and it kept messing up/having batteries die in the middle of game, so he threw it against the wall, and got a normal mouse.

That's the first thing that comes to mind. My Logitech wireless optical mouse does the same thing when the bateries are weak. I don't know about Microsoft's mouse software, but I know Logitech's lets you check the batteries' charge level.

Yeah. I'd say check the batteries and make sure there isn't too much in the path between your mouse and the receiver.

Aye, 'tis seeming like a knackered set of batteries.

Batteries are good. Fully charged. The mouse software comes with a battery meter, it claims they're good. Now, I also know the software isn't lying becuase I replaced a dead set not but a month ago.

The mouse is fine now. The shut down and power up fixed it. Of course, I let it sit overnight too. It either needed that complete shut down, or I was just encountering lots of interference last night on multiple channels. It should also be noted that the batteries last a very LONG time. The replacement I spoke of was the first since I got it for Christmas. About six months.

Connection Problem, his mouse must have eaten batteries like a madman for them to die that often. What's bizarre about my mouse, is that it takes two AA batteries, yet if I take one out, I swear to you the mouse runs just fine. So why would it need two?

Anyway, problem solved. For now...

My optical cordless one is a battery whore. It lasts about two to three weeks per set of double AA.

I once had a wireless mouse that would need a recharge by the end of the day. That thing sucked. But it was a commercial present so no money wasted

Huh. Mine must just use it's batteries very economically. I love it because I have no wires in my way tripping me up and getting stuck on things. I also love it becuase it means I can get quite relaxed and sit back with the mouse in my lap.

I've had a wireless balled mouse for ages, a Logitech, and it was great with batteries. With new laptop came desire to buy new mouse, upgraded to wireless and optical - hopefully will be as good with the batteries!!

(Oh before you ask why i didn't just keep my other mouse, it's part of a keyboard/mouse set, and if my dad needs my pc [which is at home and i'm at uni], it would've been mouseless - and I ain't using the touchpad for AutoCAD) [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]
