Swordfighting

Hey does anyone here actually know how to swordfight? If so I have too questions.

1st: How can you attack without the chance of your blade being parried? Do you know of a way that your sword cannot be knocked away?

2nd: What's your favorite weapon?

1.) None really, as circular motions help do a parry. The closest thing is a big swing, like you swing a bat, but then if the person blocks/dodges it, it could throw you off balance. A dive type thing (where you lean forward a la fencers) will also get parried.

2.) Katana or No Dachi.

1. A bat-swing, if you want to call it that, like Thrawn said, or a full charge are hard (but not impossible) to parry, but a full charge can easily be turned against you if you have a smart opponent, so i wouldn't suggest it. ASlo, if you get a sword with a gaurd that goes the full length of the hilt, that may help you from loosing your sword, but a strong grip is probably the best defence.

2. Rapiers, particulary flamberge blades.

Even without losing hold of it, it can be knocked out of control, or they knock it off to the side then they hit me before I can recover from it. Maybe fighting defensively could be a better idea, except that you can't hit the othey guy unless they lose control of their blade. Bummer.

I like English style longswords. Heavy enough to not glance off, but light enough to have good speed. Plus they make you look very noble [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Oh and are Dai-Katanas actual swords? I'm thinking that they were made up soley for Morrowind, but you never know.

My favorite is the Wakizashi. The katana is nice too.

1. Stab them when they're not looking?

2. I like oriental and middle-eastern swords. Right now I've got a thing for scimitars.

I think the general view is that every attack has a parry, the trick lies in manipulating your opponent's movements so they aren't in a position to parry your real attack.

I hate that. Why can't I just do this, "unblockable stab = ownage". Is that too much to ask for? Thanks anyway.

I like short swords with blades around 30cm in lenght. They allow a much greater speed and ease of movement. Also you can easily shift your weight into your swing to give it more power. As for not dropping your sword.. well I haven't really fought with any longer swords aside from a french fleuret (which is nearly impossible to drop! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]) so I can't really help you with that. Errr... hold tighter? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

It's natural physics. When someone creates the all inspiring new technique, then someone will look at the technique and learn how to defend against it.

Don't know sword fighting, but I would use about anything once. Claymores, Long Swords. Although, I've been using a Tulwar or a scimitar in NWN lately.

Out of all the swords I own, I still say the rapier is the best. The design is so cool, and it's pretty easy to use (Well, it's a sabre, you swing it :P...but you know what I mean)

It's not a dagger, just a little bit longer.

It's short but the blade itself it resistant enough. You'd typically use two of them at the same time; the one in your right hand (if you're right-handed) is held like a typical one-handed sword with the blade facing upwards, and you use it mainly for blocking, while the one in your other hand is held like a dagger, with the blade pointing down, and you use it to attack off the sides while using your other blade to prevent your opponent from blocking.

Gladius or other Short-swords work best in a swords only fight, you just ned to know how to use them.

But, in reality bo staff > *. The only thing that comes even remotely close to the bo's abilities is a bokken.

oh, and you're thinking like a football player. Blocking is all-too easy when you're not focused on attacking your opponent. Patients and strength is far more useful than stamina and speed. A single wise blow beats a barage of kendo-moves.

Oh, I'd just like to mention that I and a few other select people on here are the only one's who's opinion is valid. Everyone else is basing their knowledge on video-games and movies, or anime.

My friend Will and I decided to try some stuff out. We began our search for an unstopable move. We tried the most crapped up stuff... But we found one, which isn't really that helpful. Tell me how you can post a picture, and I'll show you better.

1st: One thought was that I should hold the sword upside down and stab like in the physco movie, only with both hands. It couldn't be parried, but it could be stopped quite easily. And it left you very vulnerable.

2nd: I tried jumping off of things and attacking from above. The two things that seemed to work are as follows. First I tried to do chop in the air like the guy from reign of fire. The first time will ran for cover. The second was a hit. The third was a rather clumsy block. The best arial attack was also the most stupid looking. I held the sword upside down at my waist. Then I jumped out of a tree in a sitting position with the sword facing downwards from my squat. Interesting results.

3rd: The unblockable! I was using the equal of a claymore. Stabbing outward with both hands I then began wiggling the beast around and pulling back a little, then wiggly stab again and again. Will's first response was "what the heck!". After many tries he could not stop it. It could only be vaguely useful in only vaguely small conditions, but it couldn't be stopped. Maybe because it was so stupid looking it threw him off...

Warning: Kids don't try this at home. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] We both know what we're doing,at least for the most part. Plus we decided not to use real swords since we were jumping out of trees at each other. Wood seemed like a vaguely safer idea. Anyway I don't have a digital camera, but if I could get some pictures up that would help explain.
