HI! I think I've asked this question before. Right, a showcase. Someone showed a movie of what they had done, and I asked "How did you record that stuff?" "By recording to Video and back again." "Oh..." "But, there is an alternative! FRAPS!"
Aye... Fraps... Well, I've gone to the fraps website again to download a new copy. The Demo, I didn't like (well what do I expect from a demo?). 19D could only support up to 640x480 and if I tried 640x400, WMP wouldn't run it. And I think 19A is just a patch for Still Image Captures. And so I ask... Is there anything out there that can take any res and give me any frame rate (Like I choose 16, or 32, or 19, rather than a pull down of the choices 10, 15, 20, 25, 30), and is for free? Sound is not that important. I can mix it in some how.

I believe SnagIt has a DirectX capture mode which will allow you to capture decent res images from games running DirectX like JO/JA.

Other than Fraps I know of no others though.

SnagIt... Tried the trial... Hated it... It was either too slow, or didn't give me the whole picture... I went into JK, pressed the keys I had set, and was taken out of game, I pressed go, I went back to JK, was slow to get it going (must be because I chose Cinepac), and then gave up. Anything else without limits and is free?

What kind of comp do you have? Also, the fraps FULL is better than the demo, trust me on this.

I asked about this a few mnonths ago, I scoured about fifty sites (including download.com) and I could find nothing that gave me a free program, that iddn't have limitations, AND ACTUALLY WORKED!

ahh, well, best of luck in your search...

(btw, if someone does find something, I'd love it if someone could tell me or email me or something, 'cuz I still haven't given up entirely on this fantasy)

FRAPS is about as good as you are going to get. It actually pulls the video straight from the framebuffer, which is as fast as you can do at this moment. In other words, even if there is another program with a similar technique, it won't go faster.
