Free message boards?
2005-09-01, 4:01 PM #1
I'm trying to locate free message boards for my website. I'm not looking for anything fancy at all, since it's actually going to be used just as a plain message board, not as a forum-type thing. Right now, I'm using Tag-Board, but they use popup ads, which is not acceptable. So I'm looking for something else, about as simple as their free boards.

the only one i can think of that's fairly easy and free and popular (it's fairly good) is phpBB.

If your host is runing IIS (ASP pages) then you might want to check out Snitz Forums (http://forum.snitz.com/). They're not bad and they use an Access database so all you need it the ability to set directory permissions to write. They are fully capable forums though, but I think that's better than those annoying message board trees.

Well, obviously phpBB is the best hands down. But I think it requires MySQL or MS SQL Server, I might be wrong though. I use it with MySQL and it works great.

Well, I changed my mind as I tend to do and decided to use a regular forum - www.spreebb.com. They use google ads for support. I can live with that more than with pop-ups. My colors are horrible right now because I'm trying to figure out what everything is in the style script, but meh. Has a ton of admin options, so I'm happy.

That's not what I originally had. What I had looked sorta like #massassi, but it wasn't a chat room.

www.simplemachines.org is one I recommended to CM and the one CM decided to go with for NeSi's forums. PHP and MySQL required.

www.eblah.com is another one, I'm not sure what this one uses (perl, I think?).

Simplemachines rocks. I've been using it since the first beta a few years ago :).

eblah uses perl.

However, keep in mind neither of these are "simple" in any way. They are full-fledged forums, just like this one for Massassi.
